Summary

The Pod (or pods) of Mature Source Rock is a critical element of the Total Petroleum System and incorporates all source rocks that potentially have generated hydrocarbons within the system. The Pod(s) of Mature Source Rock is shown here as a geographic boundary defined and mapped by the geologist responsible for the province, and incorporates the known limit of thermally mature, organic-rich source rock(s) that is responsible for generating and expelling discovered and undiscovered petroleum accumulations, shows, or seeps within the Total Petroleum System. Purpose

The purpose of this dataset is to define and illustrate the geographic limit and geologic boundaries of the Pod(s) of Mature Source Rock within defined Total Petroleum Systems, as required for the USGS National Assessment of Oil and Gas Project. The boundaries of the Pod(s) of Mature Source Rock maps the source unit(s) responsible for generating and expelling hydrocarbons within the system. The boundary commonly defines the combined limits of the source rock facies and measurements of organic matter thermal maturity necessary to generate hydrocarbons, such as vitrinite reflectance and RockEval geochemical data. The levels and data used to define the Pod(s) of Mature Source Rock for each system are described and defined in the text portions of this assessment publication.
