Summary

Detailed geologic mapping and sample collection was conducted in rare bedrock exposures of the Denali fault zone during the summer months of 2013, 2014, and 2015 by the U.S. Geological Survey. Data include measurements of structural geologic orientations and documentation of fault zone and host rock characteristics. Representative samples were selected for measurements of fault vein attributes and electron backscatter diffraction studies to characterize deformation mechanisms. All station locations, pertinent sample information, and associated data are included in this data release.

Purpose

The work was conducted as part of the U.S. Geological Survey, Mineral Resources Program project titled tectonic and metallogenic evolution of the eastern Yukon-Tanana upland, Alaska in cooperation with the Yukon Geological Survey. The mapping, collection of data and samples provides unique measurements, materials, and observations foundational in understanding the Denali fault zone - one of the key and iconic geologic and tectonic framework structures in the Alaska-Canada Cordilleran orogen. The Denali fault zone is a crustal-scale, terrane bounding shear zone in the northern Cordilleran orogen. As such, the Denali fault is a major control on tectonic evolution, mineral deposits, ancient and modern seismicity, and the present landscape. The data can be used for a variety of tasks including detailed geological mapping, structural geologic analyses including fault kinematic analyses, understanding fault zone internal structure and petrophysical properties such as strength, sample characterization needed for context in rock type determinations, chemical analyses, deformation mechanisms, geochronology, spatial and photographic documentation of essential relations among the field observations provided.
