Summary

In cooperation with the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYC DEP), the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) collected water and bed sediment samples along Alley Creek (Queens, New York) to help determine likely sources of fecal bacteria to the creek and Little Neck Bay. Potential terrestrial sources include stormwater, sewage via combined sewer overflow (CSO) and compromised infrastructure, bed-sediment resuspension, and groundwater discharge. Host sources that were targeted using microbial source tracking (MST) techniques included human, canine, waterfowl, and general Bacteroides. Routine water samples were collected and analyzed for the fecal indicator bacteria enterococci and fecal coliform, along with the physicochemical [...]

Purpose

The data that are presented in this data release were collected to supplement the routine water-quality monitoring component of the USGS microbial source tracking study at Alley Creek (Queens, New York) for assessing fecal contamination sources. Sediment and water samples were collected along a stormwater conveyance line between Oakland Lake and Alley Creek at NYC DEP site TI-008 for a sediment resuspension experiment conducted at the USGS OWML. Results from the experiment were used to help explain one possible source of elevated fecal indicator bacteria during non-storm conditions (such as boat wakes, tidal shifts [particularly at low tide]). Water samples and thermal imagery collected adjacent to an aboveground combined sewer system outfall TI-024 were used to determine the hydrologic connection between groundwater, surface water, and possible influence of the upgradient sewage lines. Samples collected were analyzed by the NYC DEP Microbiology Laboratory and the USGS OWML.
