Summary

This data release includes geochronological data for the Airport East trench site (40.795359°, -111.950438°) on the Taylorsville fault of the West Valley fault zone (WVFZ). The WVFZ comprises intrabasin faults in the hanging wall of the Wasatch fault zone in the northern part of Salt Lake Valley, Utah. Samples for radiocarbon and luminescence dating were collected from two paleoseismic trenches in August–September 2015. Laboratory data include four optically stimulated luminescence ages and 14 radiocarbon ages for charcoal extracted from bulk sediment samples. This database has been approved for release by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Although this database has been subjected to rigorous review and is substantially complete, [...]

Purpose

Geochronological data to support a paleoseismic investigation of the West Valley fault zone, Utah. These data support the following companion scientific article: Hylland, M.D., Hiscock, A.I., McDonald, G.N., DuRoss, C.B., Mahan, S.A., Briggs, R.W., Personius, S.F.., and Reitman, N.G., in press, Paleoseismic Investigation of the Taylorsville fault at the Airport East site, West Valley fault zone, Salt Lake County, Utah, Paleoseismology of Utah, Volume 29.

Provenance

Radiocarbon and luminescence ages are derived from bulk samples of fine-grained wetland, marsh, lacustrine, deltaic, and fluvial sediments exposed in two ~1–2-m deep trenches across the Taylorsville fault of the West Valley fault zone at the Airport East trench site (40.795359°, -111.950438°, elevation 1284 m above mean sea level).
