Summary

This dataset is a digital image mosaic of the backscatter for five (of six) sites where known rock structures exist in the St. Croix River. Backscatter is the strength of the returned signal, or reflectivity, of the riverbed and provides information about bed composition. This data can be used to investigate properties of the riverbed, such as hardness, sediment characteristics and even sediment grain size. Backscatter information will be used for investigating the use of hydroacoustic technologies for quantifying habitat for imperiled mussels Spectaclecase (Margaritifera monodonta) and Salamander (Simpsonaias ambigua) typically associated with rock structures (e.g., wing dams, revetment) in rivers. Purpose

Data were collected to quantify water depth, flow, and rock configuration (e.g., spatial arrangement, size, shape) associated with habitat (e.g., bedrock, rock outcrops, etc.) occupied by imperiled mussels Spectaclecase (Margaritifera monodonta) and Salamander (Simpsonaias ambigua). Combining these types of information with measures of slope, roughness, and backscatter may provide more information to qualitatively and quantitatively describe these rock habitats. Information on habitat associations can be used by managers to identify and characterize existing occupied habitats, identify potential reintroduction areas, and implement restoration programs. Multibeam backscatter is the reflectivity measurement, or the energy of the acoustic ping which is reflected or absorbed by the bed floor. The sediment geotechnical properties such as roughness and hardness, and the angle of incidence cause the variation in backscatter intensity. The backscatter mosaics are intended to be used to quantitatively and qualitatively describe rock structure among the different rock sites and determine whether associations exist among the rock habitats and mussels.
