Summary

This dataset is in support of the publication "The addition of 144Nd to routine ICP-MS analysis as a quick screening tool for approximating earth elements (Q-STAR) in natural waters". It contains inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) data from samples analyzed at the National Water Quality Laboratory (NWQL) from April 2021-May 2022. Data listed include estimated neodymium (Nd) concentrations and site numbers.Site numbers can be used to search published USGS data bases such as the National Water Information System, NWIS for previously published sample information and is shown here to highlight unpublished estimated Nd concentrations from this work. A set of archived samples from NWQL analyses were quantitatively measured [...]

Purpose

The screened data was collected as a part of NWQL's routine analyses over the course of one calendar year. The addition of the mass to charge ratio of 144 was done to provide a proxy analysis for rare earth elements (REEs) and these data have not been made publicly available. These data are not publicly available in other sources because they are inherently qualitative only, but are provided here as the source material for the publication. The estimated neodymium data from the screened set should only be used qualitatively. Sample identification numbers are not unique identifiers, as some samples were analyzed multiple times. We consider each analysis a separate detection. Sample numbers and site numbers can be used to query NWIS for further geochemical and spatial information. Archived samples were measured quantitatively using ICP-MS for REEs at ERDC-EL and BCSL as a form of data validation. Furthermore, field samples were collected and quantitatively analyzed with ICP-MS for REEs as another form of data validation. Both archived and field data sets can be used to study the full suite of rare earth element concentrations analyzed.
