Summary

This digital map database represents the general distribution of bedrock and surficial geologic units, and related data in the Fonts Point and Seventeen Palms 7.5’ quadrangles, California. The database delineates map units that are identified by general age and lithology following the stratigraphic nomenclature of the U.S. Geological Survey. This investigation delineates the geologic framework of an area of 75 square kilometers (km2) located west of the Salton Sea in southern California. The study area encompasses the south flank of the Santa Rosa Mountains and the eastern part of the Borrego Badlands. In this study area, regionally important stratigraphic and structural elements collectively inform the late Cenozoic geologic evolution [...]

Purpose

This investigation delineates the geologic framework of an area ~75 km2 in size situated west of the Salton Sea in southern California. The study area encompasses the southern flank of the Santa Rosa Mountains and the eastern part of the Borrego Badlands. Here, regionally important stratigraphic and structural elements come together and collectively inform the late Cenozoic geological evolution of the Anza Borrego sector of the Salton Trough province. Critical stratigraphic and structural elements in the map area include: (1) The well exposed sequences of late Cenozoic nonmarine sedimentary rocks that filled the Anza-Borrego sub-basin of the Salton Trough; (2) A tectonic boundary that—in the southern Santa Rosa Mountains—separates the sedimentary succession from underlying crystalline rocks of Peninsular Ranges-type. This tectonic boundary, named the West Salton Detachment by Axen and Fletcher (1998), is projected to underlie all late Cenozoic sedimentary strata in the Anza-Borrego sub-basin of the Salton Trough; (3) A variety of transpressional, transtensional, and strike-slip structures that deform the late Cenozoic sedimentary succession and have collectively guided syntectonic and post-tectonic depositional events within the Anza-Borrego sub-basin of the Salton Trough; and (4) The southeasternmost surface expression of the Clark Fault, a major strand of the dextral San Jacinto Fault Zone. Two overarching research goals provided the focus for this study, namely: i) to gain a structural understanding for the immense geological complexity associated with the termination in surface trace of the Clark Fault strand of the San Jacinto Fault Zone adjacent to the SW margin of the Santa Rosa Mountains and extending into the eastern Borrego Badlands, and ii) to provide a robust geological explanation as to why the Upper Cenozoic Borrego sub-basin marginal sedimentary succession appears to project skyward, to the north, to high elevations on the flank of the Southern Santa Rosa Mountains.
