Summary

These data describe bird locations obtained from backpack-mounted GPS loggers on several species of waterfowl and of Northern Harrier captured and marked in California and Oregon. Both cursory and opportunistic quality control have been performed on these data during the course of data collection. These methods include identification of mortalities and translational errors in digital transmission of data resulting in gross positional or temporal errors such as transposed digits. Species represented in this release: Circus cyaneus; Northern Harrier Anas strepera, Gadwall Anas clypeata, Northern Shoveler Anas cyanoptera, Cinnamon Teal Anas platyrhynchos, Mallard Anas americana, American Wigeon Anas acuta, Northern Pintail Anas discors, [...]

Unless otherwise stated, all data, metadata, and related materials are considered to satisfy the quality standards relative to the purpose for which the data were collected. Although these data and associated metadata have been reviewed for accuracy and completeness and approved for release by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), no warranty expressed or implied is made regarding the display or utility of the data on any other system or for general or scientific purposes, nor shall the act of distribution constitute any such warranty. Purpose

These data were collected to provide information on distribution, movement, demographic and ecological processes affecting migratory birds that winter in California. The principal use of these data are to fill information gaps, answer science questions, and inform management decisions. Examples of uses of these data include assessing interconnectivity among regions and associated habitats, understanding residence time, quantification of habitat or resource values, and identification of ecological relationships between water use, food resources, and site occupancy or abandonment (at multiple scales). Secondary uses of these data may include quantifying population parameters (e.g. survival rates) or individual behaviors (e.g. nest site selection).
