Paper files for 1058 entries for geothermal well files whether drilled or not. Some files are for "Project Areas", which contain a number of proposed wells that are later individually repermitted. The files are filed by: 1) a code tied to NBMG Bulletin 91, "Thermal Waters of Nevada"; and 2) permit or related number. The files are copies of documents required to be turned in to the Nevada Division of Minerals, which is the main state regulatory agency for geothermal exploration. Also, the NBMG has many files that predate 1985 when the Nevada Division of Minerals took over permitting from the Nevada Division of Water Resources. The files contain permits, sundry notices, logs, geology reports, scout cards, water analyses, and other items. Many of the drilled wells have cuttings that are described as a separate collection. Over 300 files contain some kind of log, though few are in folders separate from the well file.
Geothermal Well File
The NBMG keeps a database of the collection, which was revised and updated for this Inventory Project. The on-line database is just a brief index of the collection and presently contains no scanned images. Access is through the NBMG website under "Databases, Lists, Indexes, and Digital Maps" and then under "Index to Geothermal Wells Housed at NBMG." This on-line database is obsolete and scheduled to be updated soon. Though the collection is adequately stored for present usage, the files are paper and are slowly degrading with use. The Federal part of this collection largely includes joint forms used by the U. S. Bureau of Land Management and the Nevada Division of Minerals to reduce repetition and paper use. The staff level noted in question 20 is for all of the NBMG collections.
