Collection of paper aerial photographs and a few negatives. Most have been donated and the original sources include U. S. Geological Survey, U. S. Forest Service, U. S. Bureau of Land Management, Nevada Department of Transportation, U. S. Soil Conservation Service, U. S. Army Map Service, U. S. Air Force, MX Project, and private companies. Some were flown for the University of Nevada, Reno, and NBMG projects. The exact amount is unknown and is probably between 200,000 and 500,000. The collection is largely indexed by the organization that flew the photos and then by project.
Aerial Photograph Collection
Most of the projects are not complete. Most of the photographs are indexed by an assortment of paper indexes and some written geographic descriptions. Less than 10% of the photographs lack an index. Though the collection is adequately stored for present usage, the photographs are paper and are slowly degrading with use. Some have been ripped and taped. The plan is to create an electronic index and then scan the photographs for viewing on the NBMG website. Presently (April 15, 2008), a private company is scanning the main urban area photographs (the areas that have more than 90% of the usage). They will also provide us with a simple electronic index to help find what they scanned. After the company performs quality assurance and a 2-year confidentiality period lapses, the scans will be released for the NBMG website. The staff level noted in question 20 is for all of the NBMG collections.
