Collection of open-file reports and other publications mostly from the U. S. Geological Survey, Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology, Nevada Division of Minerals, Nevada Division of Water Resources, Nevada Mine Safety and Training, U. S. Bureau of Land Management, U. S. Bureau of Mines, U. S. Dept. of Energy, and other organizations. The engineering files were entered as part of this Inventory Project. The items are generally sorted by topic or publication series and range in size from one page or map to hundreds of pages with many large maps.
Open-File Report Collection
Though the collection is adequately stored for present usage, the files are paper and are slowly degrading with use. The U. S. Geological Survey part of the collection contains about 1,100 open-file reports, about 125 water resource reports, and almost 900 other documents. Some are paper copies of already scanned documents, a few are CDs, and eventually the U. S. Geological Survey will scan the rest. The NBMG also has about 230 open-file reports and about 100 other documents in the collection. Some have been scanned, and the rest will eventually be. Almost 500 engineering file documents have been entered as part of this Inventory Project and are described in detail separately. These, too, will eventually be scanned. The remaining 1200+ documents are from various organizations as noted earlier, and most will eventually also be scanned. Of this number, several hundred have to with the Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Repository, and these will be sent to the University of Nevada, Reno, Library, without being scanned. The U. S. Geological Survey scanned documents can be found on their website. The metadata is preliminary and will be modified and updated before it is finalized. The NBMG scanned documents are mostly viewable on the NBMG website. The staff level noted in question 20 is for all of the NBMG collections.
