Index of Scanned Missouri Geological Field Notebooks
Summary
This collection lists and describes scanned Missouri Geological Survey (MGS) field notebooks that have been inventoried for data. The field notebook collection is a one-of-a-kind collection, dating back to the 1800s, that contains unique geologic information not recorded elsewhere. Due to the historic nature of the collection, the data it contains would be impossible to replicate today. These data are invaluable to present day geologic research, field and mine-related projects as well as engineering and construction projects. The notebooks not only contain irreplaceable physical geologic information, but also document the evolving geologic interpretations and nomenclature during a dynamic time in the science of geology. The "Index of Missouri Scanned Geological Field Notebooks" collection is a listing of notebooks that have been digitally scanned and that had a detailed subject inventory created. The scans are available from the MGS in pdf format (see note below for further information). The detailed subject inventory includes, but is not limited to, author(s), year(s) data was collected, title or general contents, county or other location data, stratigraphic units, historic and informal stratigraphic names, mine commodities and types, minerals and lithologies, paleontology, hydrology, geologic structures, karst features, measured sections, oil and gas, and extensive comments. The number of pages in the pdf document and any blank or missing pages in the original notebooks are also noted. MGS data portals for information on the scanned and inventoried notebooks are located on a dedicated webpage https://dnr.mo.gov/land-geology/maps-data-research/field-notebooks, where the inventory is available as a downloadable Microsoft Excel file; and at the Missouri Geology Bibliography webpage https://dnr.mo.gov/land-geology/geology/missouri-geology-bibliography which includes the inventoried notebooks in the bibliography.
Note: MGS is in the process of uploading the scan files for the field notebooks into the National Digital Catalog on ScienceBase. This process will occur over several months. If you are interested in a notebook scan that is not yet uploaded, please contact the MGS at 573-368-2100.
