Summary
Library collection of 34 out-of-print Biennial Reports of the Commissioners of the State Geological and Natural History Survey to the Governor and State Legislature of Connecticut. These historic reports chronicle the legacy and evolution of the State Geological and Natural History Survey of Connecticut from its inception in 1903 until it became an entity of the state environmental agency in 1971. This collection include 682 pages of text, 18 figures, 9 plates, and 2 map sheets. These reports are valuable to science historians, academic scholars, geoscience professionals, and public policy experts. A related Connecticut Survey Library collection contains associated historic correspondence.
Although most of the reports cover a two year period, four of the reports are combined biennial reports covering four year periods. Content of the reports includes a description of Survey work during the period of the report, relevant lists of publications and water supply papers, publications in press, investigations in progress, cooperation with the United States Geological Survey and academic institutions, financial ledgers associated with contract scientists, appropriations, plans for future work, and legislation. There are separate sections within the geology program area for mapping, mineral resources, supported professors and graduate students. Within the natural history program area there are separate sections which variably include botany, entomology, ecology, and zoology. Reports are short ranging from 11 to 40 pages.
Each biennial report documents the emphasis of the Survey work during the period. For example, the Thirty-Third Biennial Report (1967-1969) describes the relationship of the Survey with the newly established Dinosaur State Park, status of geologic and geophysical mapping in Connecticut, as well as Survey recommendations for a Natural History Museum in Storrs.

Purpose
Biennial Reports of the Commissioners of the State Geological and Natural History Survey to the Governor and State Legislature of Connecticut as documentation of State Survey activities during the period of each report. Each report is published as a State Geological and Natural History Bulletin and includes a letter of transmittal to the Governor of Connecticut.
