2011 Updates - Phase 1 (information from the FY11 CDI Annual Report)
Training materials for a future USGS Data Management Workshop were developed, leveraging work done for DataONE. The materials were made available for the CDI community to review and provide feedback. All feedback was incorporated into the power point slides and finalized in FY12. Content was gathered from several sources including DataONE, a TDWI Education Data Management course attended by 6 members of the CDI community (Hutchison, Holl, Zolly, Henkel, Tessler, and Burley), and a USGS Data Management Workshop taught by Tom Chatfield of Bureau of Land Management. The CDI Data Management Training materials were posted in their final form on the USGS Data Management website (http://www.usgs.gov/datamanagement/training.php).
Benefits:
Training informs and encourages broadest possible application of data management practices.
Knowledge is power, and in the case of the USGS scientist, knowledge of data management practices in the Survey will increase likelihood of properly managed data that will lead to the power to better access, understand, and re-use datasets within USGS.
Training that sends a consistent message to all scientists about data management practices in USGS is important to maintaining the value of USGS data.
