Summary

We propose to use long-term fish-population data from a relict reach of the Pecos River, New Mexico to assess population dynamics of imperiled prairie-river minnows, including Arkansas River shiner. Development of viable management strategies requires basic understanding of population ecology. Rigorous, quantitative ecological methods can be used to analyze continuous, long-term demographic data, but such data are rarely available for imperiled, non-game fishes. Data available for the Pecos River provide a unique opportunity to apply quantitative methods to prairie-river minnow conservation and management. Purpose

Results would be presented in a series of manuscripts designed to demonstrate the value and use of long-term monitoring data for quantitative assessment of future conservation risks. They would also help explain historical declines of prairie-river fishes and guide conservation, restoration, and recovery efforts. All findings and recommendations would be presented to the GPLCC in quarterly progress reports and a comprehensive, final report. This work could lead the way for establishing quantitative methods as relevant to conservation of imperiled, non-game fishes.
