The Research Reference Library is an experimental top-level system collection in ScienceBase designed to provide an alternative organization to data assets cataloged in ScienceBase. It was inspired by the development of the Biogeographic Information System and is a virtual component of that framework. The Research Reference Library houses research references; generally, scientific papers and other information assets. In general citation records point to and use authoritative identifiers like DOIs and contain information directly from those sources and cached in the reference library for convenience. In some cases, the citations in the registry will be linked in from sources already elsewhere in ScienceBase such as the USGS Publications Warehouse collection. Future plans for this resource include linking the references to scientific provenance behind our various analytical products and including annotation that explains the significance of citations in the library and organizes them for different uses.
