The Cental Loess Hills are a prairie ecosystem with substantial area converted to agricultural practices. Eastern Red Cedar encroachment is a major concern for remaining grassland habitat. As such grasslands are intensively managed for Eastern Red Cedar control primarily through prescribed burns conducted by county prescribed burn associates and partner agencies. The regional also contains high densities of playa wetlands are a significant migratory bird stop over site and directly adjacent to other important wetland complexes.
