Summary
OBIS-USA brings together marine biological occurrence data – recorded observations of identifiable marine species at a known time and place, collected primarily from U.S. Waters or with U.S. funding. Coordinated by the Science Analytics and Synthesis (SAS) Program of the United States Geological Survey (USGS), OBIS-USA, strives to meet national data integration and dissemination needs for marine data about organisms and ecosystems. OBIS-USA is part of an international data sharing network (Ocean Biodiversity Information System, OBIS) coordinated by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Science and Cultural Organization) International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange. Federal coordination is done in collaboration with the participants of the ad hoc Biodiversity working group organized under the Interagency Working Group on Ocean Partnerships Subcommittee on Ocean Science and Technology.
OBIS-USA is national data asset lead by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with other Federal agencies including NOAA/IOOS, BOEM, NODC, and U.S. Navy. OBIS-USA is the U.S. regional node of the International Ocean Biodiversity Information System (OBIS). International OBIS is a global system comprised of a series of regional and thematic nodes that collaborate to provide access to marine biogeographic data. They follow international data standards and operational protocols to facilitate access to and interoperability of data. Scientists, resource managers, and policy makers can use OBIS data to understand species and ecosystems as well as to monitor, evaluate, and forecast change in our oceans.
This collection contains all of the datasets that have been processed by OBIS-USA to align with Darwin Core (either Occurrence Core only or OBIS-Event-Data). Each dataset is a child item to this page. Each child item includes the original data as we received it or downloaded it from the data provider, scripts used to align the original data to Darwin Core, and links to places where you can find the Darwin Core versions of the data including the Ocean Biogeographic Information System, the Global Biodiversity Information Facility, and the Integrated Publishing Toolkit.
The processing steps for the data include receiving the data from the data provider via email or download from the data provider's resource, aligning the data with Darwin Core, manually loading the data into the Integrated Publishing Toolkit, integrating into both the OBIS and GBIF data systems, and delivery of the data through the OBIS and GBIF APIs and portals.
