Summary

Hydrothermally altered rocks, particularly if water saturated, can weaken stratovolcanoes, thereby increasing the potential for catastrophic sector collapses that can lead to far-traveled, destructive debris flows, which are the largest volcanic hazards for Mount Adams and Mount Baker. Evaluating the hazards associated with such alteration is difficult because much of the alteration is obscured by ice and its depth extent is unknown. Intense hydrothermal alteration significantly reduces the resistivity and magnetization of volcanic rock and therefore hydrothermally altered rocks are identified with helicopter electromagnetic and magnetic measurements at Mount Baker and Mount Adams. High resolution magnetic and electromagnetic data [...]

Purpose

The purpose of the survey was to map the conductive and magnetic properties of the slopes and peaks of Mount Baker and Mount Adams, WA. This was accomplished by using a RESOLVE multi-coil, multi-frequency electromagnetic system supplemented by a high sensitivity cesium magnetometer. A GPS electronic navigation system ensured accurate positioning of the geophysical data. The RESOLVE system comprises of five coplanar coil pairs and one coaxial coil pair with a frequency spread of 388 Hz to 106 400 Hz. This system provided optimum definition of the conductive properties of the Earth’s layering in the top 100 m. Total coverage of the survey blocks amounted to 200 kilometres over 2 survey blocks. The survey was flown from May 8 to 15, 2002. The blocks were flown in an azimuthal direction of 90°. Two tie lines were flown over each block perpendicular to the flight lines. The purpose of this data release is to make this data publicly available.
