Summary

Apatite [Ca5(PO4)3F], titanite [CaTiSiO5], and rutile [TiO2] samples were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) from the Coles Hill uranium deposit, Virginia. The samples (in the form of polished thin sections) were prepared and analyzed for direct age dating on a laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (LA–ICPMS) system at the USGS in Denver, Colorado from August 2017 to March 2019.

Purpose

The data present comparative LA–ICPMS U-Pb dating results for apatite, titanite, and rutile and discuss the geochronology of these phases within the Coles Hill uranium deposit, Virginia. The data set also were obtained to further demonstrate the practical application of the LA–ICPMS analytical procedure for U-Pb dating in the challenging geologic setting of equivocal mineral paragenesis, complex alteration history, pervasive intergrowth, and small grain sizes of U ore minerals and paragenetically related minerals. This data release accompanies a planned publication that will describes the timing of apatite, titanite, and TiO2 mineralization in the Martinsville igneous complex and associated uranium ore, and the subsequent metamorphism, and a later late-stage metasomatic episode in this uranium deposit.
