Summary

These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. U.S. Geological Survey scientists, funded by the Climate and Land Use Change Research and Development Program, developed a dataset of 2006 and 2011 land use and land cover (LULC) information for selected 100-km2 sample blocks within 29 EPA Level 3 ecoregions across the conterminous United States. The data was collected for validation of new and existing national scale LULC datasets developed from remotely sensed data sources. The data can also be used [...]

Purpose

The purpose of this dataset is to provide 2001-2011 land use and land cover data and land change statistics that can be used for validation, training, or accuracy assessment of other LULC datasets produced from remotely sensed data sources. The data is also useful for regional assessments of the rates, trends, and amounts of U.S. land change in the 2000-2006 and 2006-2011 time periods. The dataset adds two additional dates (2006 and 2011) of land cover to the 1973-2000 Land Cover Trends Dataset (http:// http://pubs.usgs.gov/ds/844/), and extends the period of analysis to 37 years. The earlier dataset was designed to document the historical state of the nation's land surface between 1973 and 2000 and used to analyze patterns, rates, and trends in land-use/land-cover change. The land cover sample blocks and resulting analysis have been the basis for collaborative studies of the environmental consequences of change with scientists from many organizations, including USGS, NASA, NOAA, EPA, NSF, USFWS, and academia. More than 60 scientific papers have been published as of January 2015.
