Summary

The Best Management Practices Statistical Estimator (BMPSE) was developed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Office of Project Delivery and Environmental Review to provide planning-level information about the performance of structural best management practices for decision makers, planners, and highway engineers to assess and mitigate possible adverse effects of highway and urban runoff on the Nation's receiving waters (Granato 2013, 2014; Granato and others, 2021a,b). The BMPSE was used to calculate statistics and create input files for fitting the trapezoidal distribution to data from studies documenting the performance of individual structural stormwater best management [...]

Purpose

The Best Management Practices Statistical Estimator (BMPSE) was developed to provide the tools needed to estimate BMP performance statistics and urban-runoff statistics.

Rights

The Best Management Practices Statistical Estimator (BMPSE) was prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), which are agencies of the U.S. Federal government. The data used for these analyses were derived from the December 2019 version of the International Stormwater BMP Database (http://www.bmpdatabase.org/). The International Stormwater BMP Database was developed by Wright Water Engineers, Inc. and Geosyntec Consultants for the Water Environment Research Foundation, the American Society of Civil Engineers/Environmental and Water Resources Institute, the American Public Works Association, the Federal Highway Administration, and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. In some cases, however, the data used in this analysis are different from the data found in the December 2019 version of the International Stormwater BMP Database because the author worked closely with Jane Clary, the Project Manager of the BMP database to resolve a number of issues that were identified during the process for extracting, checking, and manipulating the data to do this analysis. The data were extracted from the International BMP Database and imported into the Best Management Practices Statistical Estimator (BMPSE). The USGS and the FHWA reserve the right to revise these statistics pursuant to further analysis and review. These statistics have been used by the USGS and is released on condition that the USGS or the FHWA may not be held liable for any damages resulting from their use. Information and numerical methods used in this study are attributable to the cited works. Copyright protection under Title 17 is not available for any work of the U.S. Government (17 USC §105).This database application is provided solely for the purposes of private study, scholarship, or research. Therefore, the information in this database is in the public domain for these purposes but may not be available for some commercial uses. By using the BMPSE, you agree to appropriately acknowledge the authors, the USGS, and FHWA in publications that result from the use of this database or in products that include this database in whole or in part. Because the database and related material are free and provided "as is," the authors, the USGS, the FHWA, and the United States Government are not obligated to provide users with any support, consulting, training, or assistance of any kind with regard to the use, operation, and performance of this database nor to provide users with any updates, revisions, new versions, or "bug fixes". The use of trade or product names in this database is for identification purposes only and does not constitute endorsement by the U.S. Government. This software has been approved for release by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Although the software has been subjected to rigorous review, the USGS reserves the right to update the software as needed pursuant to further analysis and review. No warranty, expressed or implied, is made by the USGS or the U.S. Government as to the functionality of the software and related material nor shall the fact of release constitute any such warranty. Furthermore, the software is released on condition that neither the USGS nor the U.S. Government shall be held liable for any damages resulting from its authorized or unauthorized use.
