Summary

This data release contains analytical data and images for a suite of drill core samples from the Mineral Hill alkaline complex (MHAC), northeastern Wyoming. Geochemistry data include major and trace element analytical results for 103 alkaline igneous rock samples. Images include hand sample photographs of halved core and full thin section images captured in transmitted, plane-polarized and cross-polarized light. Samples are from two core holes drilled by Humble Oil Company in 1970, and subsequently acquired and stored by Felix Mutschler at Eastern Washington University. The two skeletonized (incomplete) drill cores were acquired by the U.S. Geological Survey Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Spokane office in 2019, through [...]

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to assess the critical mineral potential of Paleogene intrusive rocks of the MHAC and improve existing rock classifications based on petrography and geochemistry. The MHAC is located approximately 25 km east of the carbonatite-hosted rare-earth element (REE) deposit in the Bear Lodge alkaline complex, Wyoming. Paleogene intrusive rocks from the two complexes are similar in composition and diatreme breccia pipes are found at the center of both complexes. Drill core samples from Mineral Hill were examined for evidence of possible carbonatite intrusions and analyzed for REE content. The more mafic clinopyroxenite samples from drill hole MHM-2 were analyzed for REEs that might be hosted in the abundant apatite (~15 percent modal), and platinum-group elements that accompany copper sulfide mineralization in some alkaline porphyry-epithermal systems (Werle and others, 1984; Holwell and others, 2019). These data are made available for use in geologic, exploration, and environmental background studies.
