This protection status summary of the Protected Areas Database of the United States (PAD-US) was created to provide land managers and decision makers with a general summary of management intent to protect biodiversity across the nation and identify areas managed for multiple uses, including natural resource extraction, as represented by the GAP Status Code. The full PAD-US inventory includes many designated areas that overlap in a given place (e.g. National Monument in a National Forest) and represent many values in the public interest (e.g. urban parks, farmland easements, historic sites). Overlapping designations are prioritized to remove overlapping features, facilitating the calculation of area statistics in summary reports. GAP Status Codes, a measure of management intent for the long-term protection of biodiversity, are used to calculate area protection status statistics by acres and by percent protected of the area extent of interest. Summaries of overall protection status and by Manager Name (e.g. National Park Service, State Fish and Wildlife) are available for all U.S. States and Territories, U.S. States, the Contiguous U.S., and by State, Department of the Interior Region, Congressional District, County, Hydrologic Unit Code 12, EcoRegions I-IV, and Urban Areas.
