Summary

The National Water Quality Network (NWQN) for Rivers and Streams includes 110 surface-water river and stream sites monitored by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Water Quality Program. This data release provides streamflow, nutrient, and sediment data collected and analyzed by NWQN for sites used to represent contributions to the Gulf of Mexico from 1968-2021. This dataset includes daily, monthly, and annual summaries of streamflow conditions, discrete water-quality concentrations, annual water-quality loads, and information on water-quality trends. Data from this release will be presented on the USGS ScienceBase platform.

Purpose

Data collected by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Water Quality Network (NWQN) are used to characterize the status and trends of water quality throughout the United States. Primary objectives of the NWQN are to: • determine the status and trends of loads and concentrations of contaminants, nutrients, and sediment in the Nation's large rivers, including loads to selected major estuaries; • determine the status and trends of concentrations of contaminants, nutrients, and sediment for selected wadeable streams in selected land-use and environmental settings; and In an effort to meet these objectives, the USGS annually releases nutrient and pesticide concentration and load data collected from the NWQN. This release is specifically for data representing contributions to the Gulf of Mexico.
