The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, and Susquehanna River Basin Commission, prepared hydro-conditioned geographic information systems (GIS) layers for use in the Pennsylvania StreamStats application. These data were used to update the peak flow and low flow regression equations for Pennsylvania. This dataset consists of flow direction rasters for each 8-digit Hydrologic Unit Code (HUC) area in Pennsylvania, one of the layer types needed to delineate watersheds within the HUC-8 areas, merged into a single dataset. The 59 HUCs represented by this dataset are 02040101,...

This dataset documents results from 1,041 groundwater samples collected during 1986‒2015 from 16 geologic units in Pennsylvania associated with 25 or more groundwater samples with activities or concentrations of radon-222. Radon-222 is hereafter referred to as “radon.” These 16 geologic units were evaluated in an effort to identify variations in radon concentrations and to classify potential radon exposure from groundwater and indoor air. This dataset was developed for the Pennsylvania Environmental Public Health Tracking (PAEPHT) Program to describe the spatial distribution of radon concentrations in groundwater in Pennsylvania and to illustrate data gaps that exist throughout the State. The PAEPHT Program is part...

This data release contains two spatial datasets and a data table in support of an evaluation of arsenic and uranium occurrence in Connecticut groundwater through spatially weighted and bedrock geology assessments. Spatial datasets include 1) a shapefile of 130 equal-area grid cells with associated arsenic attribute data, and 2) a shapefile of 110 equal-area grid cells with associated uranium attribute data. The State of Connecticut was divided based on a set of randomized equal-area grid cells based on the method of Scott (1990); one grid was created for arsenic, with 130 grid cells, and one was created for uranium, with 110 grid cells. Arsenic and uranium attribute data associated with the equal-area grid cells...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP), conducted an evaluation of data used by the PADEP to identify groundwater sources under the direct influence of surface water (GUDI) in Pennsylvania (Gross and others, 2022). The data used in this evaluation and the processes used to compile them from multiple sources are described and provided herein. Data were compiled primarily but not exclusively from PADEP resources, including (1) source-information for public water-supply systems and Microscopic Particulate Analysis (MPA) results for public water-supply system groundwater sources from the agency’s Pennsylvania Drinking Water Information System...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), is working to identify priority locations across Pennsylvania where additional riverine flood information may be desirable during or after major storm events. Criteria involved in the identification of potential locations for flood data collection includes locations of bridges over water, scour-critical bridges, densely populated areas, historical hurricane tracks, historical flood event data collection sites, counties with historical Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) disaster declarations, Social Vulnerability Index data, and flood-related disaster data provided by FEMA (insurance claims, individual assistance...

Regression equations, which may be used to estimate flood flows at select annual exceedance probabilities, were developed for ungaged streams in Pennsylvania. The equations were developed using annual peak flow data through water year 2015 and basin characteristics for 285 streamflow gaging stations across Pennsylvania and surrounding states. The streamgages included active and discontinued continuous-record stations, as well as crest-stage partial-record stations, and required a minimum of 10 years of annual peak streamflow data for inclusion in the study. Explanatory variables significant at the 95-percent confidence level for one or more regression equations included the following basin characteristics: drainage...

In cooperation with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, and Susquehanna River Basin Commission, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has compiled a series of GIS datasets for Pennsylvania to be implemented into the USGS StreamStats application. These data were compiled from the high definition National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) and the 10-meter resolution National Elevation Dataset (NED). By using these datasets, and those from the U.S. Geological Survey Data Release https://doi.org/10.5066/P9HK9SSQ, users will be able to delineate watersheds and calculate basin characteristics using the StreamStats application.
