This dataset contains the recorded water temperatures of specific sites in western Lake Erie during the summer of 2014.

This dataset contains the recorded water temperatures of specific sites in western Lake Erie, Saginaw Bay in Lake Huron, and Grand Traverse Bay in Lake Michigan during the summer of 2015. Sites with just a number were from Lake Erie. Sites from Grand Traverse Bay have a GTB prefix; Saginaw Bay= SB prefix.

In this dataset, we report on the biomass and abundance of invertebrates collected on artificial substrates in the Great Lakes from 2013-2016. Sampling effort was focused on the western basin of Lake Erie, but also includes some sampling from Green Bay (Lake Michigan), Grand Traverse Bay (Lake Michigan) and Saginaw Bay (Lake Huron). In 2015 and 2016, we increased the number of taxa that we quantified. Round Hester-Dendy samplers were used as artificial substrates. Substrates were deployed at sites where unionid mussels were also deployed in cages.

This dataset contains the recorded water temperatures of specific sites located in western Lake Erie and the rivermouths of the Fox River and Duck Creek as they flow into Green Bay in Lake Michigan during the summer of 2016. Sites with just a number were from Lake Erie. Sites from Green Bay = GB prefix; Fox Rivermouth = FX prefix; Duck Creek rivermouth = DK prefix.

Resource managers are currently using reductions in the Upper Mississippi River’s (UMR) water levels during summer to mimic historical water levels and rehabilitate habitats for vegetation and desirable fauna. However, drawdowns may have adverse effects on native mussel populations. Over the past few years, systematic, pool-wide surveys of mussels in Pools 5, 6, and 18 have been conducted. The objective of this study was to characterize the effects of water level drawdown on the mortality, movement, and behavior of a common Lampsilini species, Lampsilis cardium, and a common Amblemini species, Amblema plicata, in Pool 6 of the UMR during 2009 and 2010. About 460 mussels were tagged and followed about weekly during...

Proposed invasive carp barriers may threaten populations of migratory fishes in the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway and the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area by preventing movements between rivers needed to fulfill life history requirements. Moreover, reproducing populations of invasive carp could alter aquatic food webs and negatively affect mussels and migratory fishes. In this study, nonlethal chemical techniques were used to determine the trophic positions and migratory histories of lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) captured in the St. Croix and Mississippi rivers. Stable isotope analyses demonstrated differences in trophic position among sturgeon captured in different locations among the...

Large lakes provide a variety of ecological services to surrounding cities and communities. Many of these services are supported by ecological processes that are threatened by the increasing prevalence of cyanobacterial blooms which occur as aquatic ecosystems experience cultural eutrophication. Over the past 10 years, Lake Erie experienced cyanobacterial blooms of increasing severity and frequency, which have resulted in impaired drinking water for the surrounding communities. Cyanobacterial blooms may impact ecological processes that support other services, but many of these impacts have not been documented. Secondary production (production of primary consumers) is an important process that supports economically...

Data on ambient water temperatures and invertebrate community composition from ~40 sites in the western basin of Lake Erie, Saginaw Bay (Lake Huron), Grand Traverse Bay (Lake Michigan) and Green Bay (Lake Michigan). These samples were collected as part of a study on spatial variation in ecosystem processes.

Understanding the quantity and form of nutrient loading to large lakes is necessary to understand controls over primary production, phytoplankton community composition and the production of phytotoxins. Nutrient loading estimates to large lakes are primarily made at stream gages that are deliberately placed outside the direct influence of lake processes, but these estimates cannot take into account processes that occur in the biologically active river-to-lake transition zone. These transition zones (rivermouths) sometimes alter nutrient concentrations and ratios substantially, but few studies have directly measured processing rates of nutrients within rivermouths. From April through September 2016, we conducted...
