Sugar Creek Lake is located approximately 4 miles northwest of Moberly, Missouri, in Randolph County, and has a full-pool surface area of approximately 330 acres. The lake primarily is used for recreation and drinking-water supply for the town of Moberly, Missouri. An earthen dam approximately 38-feet high and 1,125-feet long was constructed across the Sugar Creek valley in 1922. The elevation of the top of the dam is approximately 754 feet, with a 90-feet wide concrete spillway located near the right bank (west end) at an elevation of 746.8 feet. A previous bathymetric survey was completed in 2003. In cooperation with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the U.S. Geological Survey resurveyed the bathymetry...

Water supply lakes are the primary source of water for many communities in northern and western Missouri. Therefore, accurate and up-to-date estimates of lake capacity are important for managing and predicting adequate water supply. Many of the water supply lakes in Missouri were previously surveyed by the U.S. Geological Survey in the early 2000s (Richards, 2013) and in 2013 (Huizinga, 2014); however, years of potential sedimentation may have resulted in reduced water storage capacity. Periodic bathymetric surveys are useful to update the area/capacity table and to determine changes in the bathymetric surface. Old Lake (locally known as Bowling Green West) is a water supply lake used by the city of Bowling Green...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) did a bathymetric survey of the lower reach of the Maumelle River upstream of Lake Maumelle, near Little Rock, Arkansas, from July 9—11, 2019. Channel bed elevations (thalweg) were collected to support a USACE modeling effort on a 5-mile reach of the Maumelle River. In parts of the reach where the water was partially impounded, depth data were collected using an acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) coupled with a survey-grade deferentially corrected global positioning system (GPS) receiver. Depth data were converted to channel bed elevation data by subtracting the depth value from the GPS derived water-surface...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MDNR), collects data pertaining to the surface-water resources of Missouri. These data are collected as part of the Missouri Ambient Water-Quality Monitoring Network (AWQMN) and are stored and maintained by the USGS National Water Information System (NWIS) database. These data constitute a valuable source of reliable, impartial, and timely information for developing an improved understanding of the water resources of the State. Water-quality data collected between 1993 and 2017 were analyzed for long term trends and the network was investigated to identify data gaps or redundant data to assist MDNR on how to optimize...

Clearwater Lake, on the Black River near Piedmont in Reynolds County, Missouri, was constructed in 1948 and is operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for flood-risk reduction, recreation, and fish and wildlife habitat. The lake area is about 1,800 acres with about 34 miles of shoreline at the conservation pool elevation of 498 feet. Periodically, many lakes operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have bathymetric and sediment surveys to monitor the status of the lake. In May 2017, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, surveyed the bathymetry of Clearwater Lake to prepare an updated bathymetric map and surface area and capacity table. A previous survey completed...

Beaver Lake was constructed in 1966 on the White River in the northwest corner of Arkansas for flood control, hydroelectric power, public water supply, and recreation. The surface area of Beaver Lake is about 27,900 acres and approximately 449 miles of shoreline are at the conservation pool level (1,120 feet above the North American Vertical Datum of 1988). Sedimentation in reservoirs can result in reduced water storage capacity and a reduction in usable aquatic habitat. Therefore, accurate and up-to-date estimates of reservoir water capacity are important for managing pool levels, power generation, water supply, recreation, and downstream aquatic habitat. Many of the lakes operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers...

A hydrogeologic framework of the Ozark Plateaus aquifer system was constructed as the base for a groundwater flow model developed as part of the U.S. Geological Survey Water Availability and Use Science Program to aid in the understanding of groundwater availability in select aquifer systems of the United States. The Ozark Plateaus aquifer system study area (hereinafter referred to as the “Ozark system”) is nearly 70,000 square miles and includes parts of Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma. A hydrogeologic framework was constructed to represent the altitudes and thicknesses of nine hydrogeologic units within the Ozark Plateaus aquifer system - . the Western Interior Plains confining system, Springfield Plateau...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) conducted a bathymetric survey of the White River immediately downstream of the Beaver Reservoir Dam in Carroll County, Arkansas, on January 22, 2020. Channel-bed elevations were collected to support a USACE hydraulic modeling effort on the White River. Cross-sectional data within the river channel were collected using an acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) coupled with a differentially corrected global positioning system (GPS) receiver. Water-depth data were converted to channel-bed elevation data by subtracting the depth value from the GPS derived water-surface elevation. Additional channel elevations (topographic...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the Little Rock District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers conducted a bathymetric survey of the Black River from Clearwater Lake Dam near Piedmont, Missouri, to southern Butler County, Missouri, from June 16-19, 2020 and from June 22-24, 2020. One hundred and eight sites were surveyed at pre-established transect locations along a 45-mile reach at distances spaced from about 0.3 to 2 miles apart. River-channel cross sections were surveyed to determine water depths along each transect using an acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP). Positional location of the water-depth locations was obtained from a global positioning system receiver onboard the ADCP. Water-surface...

Collection of bathymetric quality-assurance data in September 2018 at Sugar Creek Lake near Moberly, Missouri, used a marine-based mobile mapping unit that operates with several components: a multibeam echosounder (MBES) unit, an inertial navigation system (INS), and a data acquisition computer. Bathymetric quality-assurance data were collected using the MBES unit at 4 transects oriented perpendicular to the longitudinal transects of the bathymetric survey data. The resulting bathymetric dataset was minimally processed using filters in the HYPACK/HYSWEEP software (http://www.hypack.com) to remove data spikes or erroneous points. The resulting bathymetric quality-assurance data set contained approximately 8.7 million...
