This dataset contains data collected within limestone cedar glades at Stones River National Battlefield (STRI) near Murfreesboro, Tennessee. This dataset contains information on soil microbial metabolic response for soil samples obtained from certain quadrat locations (points) within 12 selected cedar glades. This information derives from substrate utilization profiles based on Biolog EcoPlates (Biolog, Inc., Hayward, CA, USA) which were inoculated with soil slurries containing the entire microbial community present in each soil sample. EcoPlates contain 31 sole-carbon substrates (present in triplicate on each plate) and one blank (control) well. Once the microbial community from a soil sample is inoculated onto...

Vernal pools are small, seasonal wetlands that provide critically important seasonal habitat for many amphibian species of conservation concern. Natural resource managers and scientists in the Northeast, as well as the Northeast Refugia Research Coalition, coordinated by the Northeast CSC, recently identified vernal pools as a priority ecosystem to study, and recent revisions to State Wildlife Action Plans highlighted climate change and disease as primary threats to key vernal pool ecosystems. Mapping out the hydrology of vernal pools across the Northeast is an important step in informing land management and conservation decision-making. Project researchers modeled the hydrology of roughly 450 vernal pools from...

This dataset contains data collected within limestone cedar glades at Stones River National Battlefield (STRI) near Murfreesboro, Tennessee. This dataset contains measurements of soil respiration at certain quadrat locations (points) within 12 selected cedar glades. Field measurements were made of soil respiration (carbon dioxide efflux) using a LICOR Infrared Gas Analyzer (IRGA), LI-6400 XT portable photosynthesis device (LICOR Inc., Lincoln, NE, USA), fitted with a soil-chamber attachment. At least 48 hours prior to soil respiration measurement, three soil collars (plastic rings of approximately 2 inches depth) were inserted into the soil surface at each point and the height of each soil collar above the soil...

Climate change threatens many wildlife species across the Pacific Northwest. As the climate continues to change, wildlife managers are faced with the ever-increasing challenge of allocating scarce resources to conserve at-risk species, and require more information to prioritize sites for conservation. However, climate change will affect species differently in different places. In fact, some places may serve as refuges for wildlife—places where animals can remain or to which they can easily move to escape the worst impacts of climate change. Currently, different datasets exist for identifying these resilient landscapes, known as climate refugia, but they are often not readily useable by wildlife managers. To address...

This item contains a data file (.csv) and associated metadata document (.xml) for the daily time-step hydrologic model for Sinking Pond from January 1, 1854 through September 30, 2019 under the original calibration and the recalibration, along with daily climate (temperature and precipitation) values and observed stage values used in the recalibration process. The data file ‘Daily_values_for_climate_stage_and_model_terms.csv’ is a required input to the R script in this data release as it provides the daily climate variables used to drive the model and the daily stage values used for calibration. Model terms are described briefly in the metadata document ‘Daily values for climate and stage observations, hydrologic...

This item contains a data file (.csv) and associated metadata document (.xml) for the recalibration of the Sinking Pond hydrologic model. The hydrologic model was recalibrated using the R script ‘annotated_R_script_for_model_recalibration.R’ and the input dataset ‘Daily_values_for_climate_stage_and_model_terms.csv’ to produce recalibrated values for the four calibrated parameters in the model: KBR, KPR, KBG, and PG (see the ‘Entity and Attribute’ section of the metadata document ‘Model recalibration results including recalibrated parameters and model performance statistics.xml’ for parameter definitions; for additional information see table 9 in Wolfe and others, 2004). The data file ‘model_recalibration_results.csv’...

The southeast United States has many lakes, streams and reservoirs that serve as important drinking water sources, recreational, agricultural, and ecological uses. Unfortunately, harmful algal blooms are becoming more common in these waters, causing health issues for humans and animals. While it is clear that nutrients stimulate algae growth, it isn’t clear if there are other parameters that stimulate the development of harmful algal blooms. The scientific literature describes additional parameters that may affect algae growth, such as storm occurrence, temperature, dissolved metals, erosion of soils, length of growing season, and hydroperiod. This project will address these different parameters and examine how climate...

This dataset contains data collected within limestone cedar glades at Stones River National Battlefield (STRI) near Murfreesboro, Tennessee. This dataset contains measurements of volumetric soil water content at certain quadrat locations (points) within 12 selected cedar glades. All soil water content measurements in this file were performed by thermogravimetric analysis (oven-drying) using the following procedure. First, soil samples were obtained using a brass cylinder of height 5 centimeters (cm) and interior diameter 4.9 cm. The cylinder was partially inserted into the soil, using a hammer if necessary, to a depth of roughly 2 to 3 cm. Soil adjacent to the inserted cylinder was removed and a flat plastic spatula...

This dataset contains data collected within limestone cedar glades at Stones River National Battlefield (STRI) near Murfreesboro, Tennessee. This dataset represents data collected at 150 quadrat locations (points) within 12 selected cedar glades and contains quantitative characterizations of the ground surface, measurements of depth to bedrock (soil depth), and calculations of canopy coverage based on digital photography. When combined with the hydrologic and soil chemical and microbiological datasets described in the summary section, this information can be used to evaluate relationships between abiotic stressors (such as extreme hydrologic conditions, extreme temperatures, or thin soils) and soil microbial indicators....

This data release includes data-processing scripts, data products, and associated metadata for a study to recalibrate a hydrologic model for Sinking Pond, a 35-hectare seasonally flooded karst depression wetland located at Arnold Engineering Development Complex near Manchester, Tennessee. A hydrologic model for Sinking Pond was originally published by Wolfe and others (2004). That original model used daily climatic inputs from weather stations and was calibrated and validated using daily stage observations from Sinking Pond. These datasets began January 1, 1854 and October 1, 1992 (for climate and stage observations, respectively) and extended through September 30, 2002. Recalibration of the Sinking Pond hydrologic...

In the Southeastern U.S., “insular ecosystems” may be particularly vulnerable to ecological effects from climate change. These insular ecosystems share a few key biogeographic characteristics: (1) occurrences that are spatially discrete, (2) relatively small geographic footprints, and (3) with steep ecological and environmental gradients at their boundaries. Examples include rock outcrop ecosystems (e.g. Piedmont granite outcrops, Appalachian high-elevation outcrops), grasslands (high-elevation balds, xeric limestone prairies), isolated wetlands (Carolina bays, karst depression wetlands) and riparian riverscour systems. Such insular ecosystems tend to support concentrations of endemic and disjunct species; thus...
