This data collection consists of a synthetic stream network and associated catchments developed as the foundation for a Spatially Referenced Regressions on Watershed Attributes (SPARROW) dissolved-solids source and transport model for the Upper Colorado River Basin (UCRB). The SPARROW model requires a hydrologically connected representation of a stream network through which loads are transported from an upstream reach to the next reach downstream (Schwarz and others, 2006; Moore and others, 2004). Each stream reach or segment within this synthetic stream network has an associated local drainage area or catchment used to calculate catchment characteristics that may have an effect on loads being modeled. The synthetic...

A previously developed three-dimensional steady-state numerical groundwater-flow model was modified to transient conditions with respect to well withdrawals, and used to simulate drawdown and capture of natural discharge from existing and proposed groundwater withdrawals in Snake Valley and adjacent areas in western Utah and eastern Nevada. The original steady-state model simulates and was calibrated to 2009 conditions and was used as the first stress period in this transient model. Six transient stress periods, spanning 2010-2114, were added to the model to assess timing of the potential withdrawal effects. A seventh steady-state stress period was also added to determine the ultimate long-term effects of the well...

These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. This dataset was created in support of a U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) study focusing on groundwater resources in the Great Basin carbonate and alluvial aquifer system (GBCAAS). The GBCAAS is a complex aquifer system comprised of both unconsolidated and bedrock formations covering an area of approximately 110,000 square miles. The aquifer system is situated in the eastern portion of the Great Basin Province of the western United...

This generalized geology dataset was developed as input to a total dissolved solids Spatially Referenced Regressions on Watershed Attributes (SPARROW) model for the Upper Colorado River Basin (UCRB; Kenney and others, 2009) and for a more recent update to that model. The largest source of naturally generated dissolved solids in streams of the UCRB is the rocks underlying stream basins, particularly rocks high in dissolvable minerals. For the purposes of modeling, the scale of the geologic dataset optimally should be similar to the scale of the stream-catchment network used in the model but simplified to reduce the number of geologic units represented in the data. This dataset was developed to meet both scale and...

These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. This dataset contains the amalgamation of the hydrographic area (HA) boundaries and polygons for the GBCAAS study area. The study area consists of 165 HAs based on Great Basin HAs defined by the USGS in 1988 (Harrill and others, 1988; Buto, 2009). This dataset does not contain the HA boundaries or geologic details included in the source dataset. For that information, please see the metadata for the source dataset at https://water.usgs.gov/GIS/metadata/usgswrd/XML/sir2010_5193_ha1000.xml...

A previously developed numerical groundwater flow model of the eastern Great Basin was used to investigate where potential drawdown and capture of natural discharge is likely to result from potential groundwater withdrawals from existing and applied for groundwater rights in Snake Valley, Utah and Nevada. SIR 2014-5213 (https://doi.org/10.3133/sir20145213), SIR 2017–5011 (https://doi.org/10.3133/sir20175011), and SIR 2017-5072 (https://doi.org/10.3133/sir20175072) document the construction and calibration of the previous versions of this model. The eastern Great Basin model consists of a parent model and a child model. The parent model covers the focus study area and was used for the simulations presented in this...

These data are derived from the Basin Characterization Model (BCM) and used as input to a total dissolved solids SPARROW model for the Upper Colorado River Basin. The BCM mechanistically models the pathways of precipitation into evapotranspiration, infiltration into soils, runoff, or percolation below the root zone to recharge groundwater (Flint and others, 2013). The dataset is composed of twelve, 270-meter resolution raster layers representing mean total annual values for water years 1985 - 2012 of actual evapotranspiration (aet), climatic water deficit (cwd), excess water (exc), snowmelt (mlt), snowpack (pck), potential evapotranspiration (pet), precipitation (ppt), recharge (rch), runoff (run), sublimation (sbl),...
