The Mineral Resources of Virginia (MRV) Program oversees the inventory of specific mineral occurrences, prospects, mines, quarries, and other mining and processing sites of base and precious metals, industrial minerals, and energy resources in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The resulting information is formatted for inclusion in the MRV database. The goal of the MRV Program is to establish and maintain a digital database of statewide mineral and energy resources information to serve the following purposes: Preserve key information about mineral occurrences, mines, prospects, oil and gas extraction sites, and mining-related processing sites in a digital archive; Support public safety and environmental investigations;...

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Geologic Sections dataset consists of site-specific, large-scale geologic cross-sections (composite sheets). These sections were acquired from VDOT in order to save them from disposal. There are 5,500 geological profiles created for highway construction projects containing extensive core, auger and split-spoon logs at scales of 1:50 and 1:100 providing a unique record of subsurface geological and geotechnical data along roadways throughout Virginia. The thousands of feet of vertical subsurface data represents millions of dollars of investment in data acquisition by VDOT. The sections are useful as indicators of subsurface geology in large parts of Virginia. ...

The Coal Quality Data Collection includes results of laboratory analysis for 375 coal samples collected as part of a cooperative sampling program between DGMR and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The samples were collected by DGMR staff during the period from 1975 to 1988 from a six county area in the Southwest Virginia Coalfield. A total of 38 coal beds are represented in the sampling program. For each sample location there are laboratory results for Proximate and Ultimate analysis, ash-fusion temperatures, and major- and minor- element analyses.

The Aerial Photographs Collection consists of high- and low-altitude, black and white (B/W) and color (C) aerial photographs taken between 1936 and 2002. Flight coverage is mainly in Virginia, but there is also overlap into the adjoining states of Kentucky, Maryland, and West Virginia. Photo coverage is not complete for the entire state for any given flight year. A minor part of the collection (<5%) includes infrared photos. The photos are generally in paper format and suitable for use as stereo pairs. Many of the photos were taken during 1950-60 as part of the U.S. Geological Survey program to photo-revise the topographic map series. Photo-mosaic index maps are unavailable for many of the flight missions.

The Historic Uranium Exploration Information Collection consists of scanned images of reports, maps, laboratory analyses, and other data that was collected by Marline Uranium Corporation during the period from 1979 to 1985. The documents pertain to the Coles Hill uranium deposit located in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. Most of this information has been scanned and is available in PDF format. There are approximately 1,500 digital files associated with this collection.

The Borehole Database for Virginia provides information about boreholes drilled by Virginia Energy as part of on-going geologic mapping studies conducted in the Coastal Plain of Virginia. This collection is available for study and sampling by scientists, citizens, government agencies, and by industry. Virginia Energy maintains this collection to support the wise use of Virginia's resources by providing quality geologic and mineral resource information. The collection includes records for approximately 1,800 boreholes, with location information, lithologic log, and interpreted formation contacts. These boreholes were drilled for water wells, geologic research, geotechnical engineering studies, and environmental...

The Historic Topographic Maps Collection consists of compiled and digitally rendered two series of topographic maps for Virginia. Historical topographic maps can be useful resources for those interested in researching the changes in a particular area over time. Maps of different ages can also illustrate how development has occurred in a location. These map series were produced by the United States Geological Survey in cooperation with the Commonwealth of Virginia. They are in 15-minute and 30-minute quadrangle format, respectively, and range in age from 1884 to 1962. Detailed map explanations for each series have been scanned separately. PDF indexes have also been created to make maps of interest easier to locate....

The Division of Geology and Mineral Resources (DGMR) Publications Index consists of a database with information on DGMR's Geologic Publications. This includes all formal publications as well as bulletins, information circulars, mineral resource circulars, open file reports, report of investigations and mineral resources reports. The index will provide basic information such as title, author, abstract and a link to the DMME Web Store where customer can purchase hard copies or download copies for free.

This collection includes 4,525 rock thin sections archived by the DMME Virginia Division of Geology and Mineral Resources. The thin sections represent a wide range of rock types in Virginia and are available for petrographic studies. Many, but not all of these thin sections are associated with rock specimens inventoried in the Rock Repository, identified by the tag "R-#####". Other thin sections represent rock specimens from earlier studies for which documentation may exist, yet the original rock sample may not be available. The location coordinates for the thin sections are approximate, given by the 7.5-minute quadrangle centroid. Work continues on this collection to better document missing information.

The Clay Sample Collection consists of descriptions of physical and chemical characteristics of Virginia’s potential clay resources. Field sample descriptions include physical appearance, sample interval, and location information. Laboratory analyses included geotechnical tests for plasticity, workability, dry strength, pH, bloating, and firing. For some samples there may also be laboratory results for major, minor, and trace parameters. The collection includes 870 sample records published in DGMR Publications 36, 68, 76; Bulletins 2, 13, 20; and Mineral Resources Report 2, 5, 6, 8, 12, and 13. This collection provides statewide data on potential clay materials resources which could be used for ball clay, floor...

The Economic Geology Mineral Resource Files comprise an extensive collection of reports documenting visits to mine sites, letters to and from mineral operators and land owners, unpublished laboratory analytical reports, field notes, photographs, sketch maps, and historic newspaper and periodical clippings pertaining to inactive mine and prospect locations throughout Virginia. The files are organized by folders and are stored in metal file cabinets. Document scanning, digital conversion, georeferencing site locations, and metadata creation is in progress. There are an estimated 9,500 documents.

The geophysical data collection consists of geophysical data sets that are relevant to Virginia and include seismic lines, basemaps, processed seismic data, magnetic data, aeroradiometric surveys, gravity surveys, etc. This collection covers a variety of seismic studies completed by numerous companies and institutions. Seismic data is stored in the Natural Resources building as paper maps, magnetic tapes, film, and digital files. The geophysical data collection is accessible by appointment with DGMR staff.

The Rock Core Repository consists of drill cores from across the Commonwealth of Virginia. These cores were drilled as part of mineral and fossil fuel exploration activities, geotechnical engineering work, geological investigations, and environmental work conducted by industry, government and academia. Most of the cores were donated to DMME. The physical cores are stored in the DMME ASF building adjacent to the Natural Resources building in Charlottesville, VA. The overall condition of the collection is good, with the majority of the cores stored in wooden, metal, or cardboard core boxes. Some of the core has associated drill logs and chemical analysis available. Some of the drill logs are scanned. Some of the...
