Radio-collared wolves in the Superior National Forest that were killed by other wolves or probably killed by wolves between 1968 and 2014

The gray wolf (Canis lupus) in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan has been on and off the Endangered Species List since March 2007, and in late 2014 was placed back on because of legal technicalities, although biologically it is recovered there with > 4,000 wolves. The wolf has been restored to Yellowstone National Park and Montana and Idaho, is repopulating Oregon and Washington, and is being restored to Arizona and New Mexico. The federal government must continue monitoring wolf populations for 5 years post-delisting. By studying the long-term trend of an extant wolf population and its prey, scientists and managers can gain insights into the population and demographic trends that can be expected in restored populations....

Wolves (Canis lupus) and Canada Lynxes (Lynx canadensis) are on the Endangered Species List. Both inhabit pristine habitat in Minnesota, where it is possible and important to study their biology and interaction with their prey under natural conditions. These studies will allow managers and administrators to assess the progress of restoration and recovery of these species and anticipate biological and political problems that may arise during recovery. Most contentious is the issue of wolf interaction with their prey. Thus studies of wolf prey animals such as deer (Odocoileus virginianus), moose (Alces alces) and elk (Cervus elaphus) and the interactions of wolves with them are as important as investigatio [see Narratives...

Annual counts of gray wolves in a 2,060 sq km study area in the east-central part of the Superior National Forest, Minnesota, 2007-2016 based on number of wolf groups aerially observed or tracked during winters.
This dataset contains gray wolf (Canis lupus) survival and cause-specific mortality data from radiocollared wolves (n=756 collared-wolf tenures) from 1968-2018 in the USGS Wolf Project study area (2,060 km2) of the Superior National Forest, USA, an area that also includes the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Also, included are the annual resident winter wolf counts for the study area.

Risk to predators hunting dangerous prey is an emerging area of research and could account for possible persistent differences in gray wolf (Canis lupus) pack sizes. We documented significant differences in long-term wolf-pack-size averages and variation in the Superior National Forest (SNF), Denali National Park and Preserve, Yellowstone National Park, and Yukon, Canada (p<0.01). The SNF differences could be related to the wolves’ risk when hunting primary prey, for those packs (N=3) hunting moose (Alces americanus) were significantly larger than those (N=10) hunting white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) (F1,8=16.50, p=0.004). Our data support the hypothesis that differential pack-size persistence may be perpetuated...

Hematology and body mass were studied in nine female and five male free-ranging wolves in the Superior National Forest handled 4-17 times during 1989-1993. The dataset includes the following data for each wolf studied: wolf identifier, dates caught, sex, age, body mass in kg, adjusted body mass in kg, and values of hemoglobin (Hb), red blood cells (RBC), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), hematocrit (HCT), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), and white blood cells (WBC).

This dataset contains the capture location and summer location of deer radio-collared in the Garden Lake deeryard, near Ely MN during the summers of 1998, 1999, 2001, 2014, and 2017. The data set also contains the distance and direction deer migrated from capture locations to summer locations.
