Drought and wildfire pose enormous threats to the integrity of natural resources that land managers are charged with protecting. Recent observations and modeling forecasts indicate that these stressors will likely produce catastrophic ecosystem transformations, or abrupt changes in the condition of plants, wildlife, and their habitats, in regions across the country in coming decades. In this project, researchers will bring together land managers who have experienced various degrees of ecosystem transformation (from not yet experiencing any changes to seeing large changes across the lands they manage) to share their perspectives on how to mitigate large-scale changes in land condition. The team will conduct surveys...

Album caption and index card: Two ledges of basalt spectacularly exposed in the east wall of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone at The Narrows near Tower Falls. The light-colored rocks between the basalt flows are ancient stream gravels deposited about 1.5 million years ago, when the channel of the Yellowstone River was farther east and not as deep as it is today. The hill is capped by lake sediments, sand, and gravel deposited when the Yellowstone River was blocked by a glacial dam farther downstream (to the left). The brown rocks at the base of the cliff are Absaroka andesite breccias. Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. 1970. Published as a portion of Figure 33 (upper photo) in U.S. Geological Survey Bulletin...

PI-CASC regularly interacts with a diverse and extensive network of stakeholder organizations at federal, territory, state, county, and local levels across the Pacific Region, supporting communication and iterative problem solving between researchers, managers, and decision makers. In addition to these partnerships, PI-CASC has two important ongoing collaborative initiatives. Pacific Islands-Alaska CASC collaboration The PI-AK CASC collaboration is aimed at bringing together scientist and resource managers from the Pacific and Alaska regions to share insights on related climate adaptation challenges in Ridge-to-Reef (R2R) and Icefield-to-Ocean (I2O) ecosystems. Similarities in landscapes and communities in these...

Album caption: Flow failure down a hillside slope on the Nunez Ranch 4 miles (6.4 km) east of Half Moon Bay. Note the man standing at the base of the deposited debris and a second man standing on the lower edge of the cavity at the top of the slide. Additional incipient flow failures with much smaller movements also occurred on the convex hill to the left of the principal landslide. The Thera cluster is named for the volcanic island Thera (also known as Santorini), the southernmost member of the Cyclades island group in the Aegean Sea. The cluster is dominated by an earthquake sequence that began in early February, 2025, 20-40 km northeast of Thera. The sequence has swarmlike characteristics but it is, as yet, unclear if the activity is volcanic or tectonic in nature. The cluster includes the 7.7 Mw tsunamigenic earthquake of July 9, 1956 and 3 of its aftershocks. The mainshock is located ~10 km southeast of the southern end of the ongoing 2025 swarm, midway between the southern end of the Santorini-Amorgos Fault and the Anafi-Astypalaea Fault (Leclerc, F., Palagonia, S., Feuillet, N. et al....

Data presented are results of surveys in 2021 for Southwestern Willow Flycatcher (Empidonax traillii extimus) in San Diego County, California. Surveys were conducted at the 2016-19 nest monitoring locations (Cleveland National Forest, Rey River Ranch, and Vista Irrigation District) and at Lake Henshaw along the Upper San Luis Rey River. Surveys were conducted along multiple sections of the river where permission to access properties could be obtained. Locations were surveyed using a standardized protocol three to four times between 15 May and 31 July. The number, age (adult or juvenile), sex, banding status (color banded or not, and if so, color combination), and breeding status (paired, undetermined, or transient)...

This dynamic data release presents an aquatic reflectance product with 20-meter spatial resolution derived from Sentinel-2 satellite imagery for the conterminous United States using the Atmospheric Correction for OLI “lite” (ACOLITE). Aquatic reflectance, noted Rhow in ACOLITE documentation, is defined here as unitless water-leaving radiance reflectance and represents the ratio of water-leaving radiance (units of watts per square meter per steradian per nanometer) to downwelling irradiance (units of watts per square meter per nanometer) multiplied by π. This is also known as remote sensing reflectance (units of per steradian) multiplied by π. These data are intended for use in remote sensing of water color and differ...
