The Critical Minerals in Archived Mine Samples Database (CMDB) contains chemistry and geologic information for historic ore and ore-related rock samples from mineral deposits in the United States. In addition, the database contains samples from archetypal deposits from 27 other countries in North America, South America, Asia, Africa and Europe. Samples were obtained from archived ore collections under the U.S. Geological Survey's project titled "Quick Assessment of Rare and Critical Metals in Ore Deposits: A National Assessment" (2008 to 2013) in an effort to begin an assessment of the Nations' previously mined ore deposits for critical minerals. Mineralized and altered rock samples were provided by the Colorado...

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data release (ver. 1.2, April 2022) contains a set of previously unpublished geochemical data from project studies of primitive areas in central Idaho, including the Clear Creek-Upper Big Deer Creek Area, the Salmon River Breaks and Sawtooth Primitive Areas, and the Gospel-Hump Wilderness Area. The purpose of the USGS Idaho Primitive Area studies, conducted from 1966 to 1984, was to describe the geology, determine petrologic and geochemical characteristics, and evaluate the mineral resource potential of these primitive areas and adjacent study areas. In the case of the Idaho Primitive Area study (Cater and others, 1973), the primitive area covers 1,915 square miles; adjacent...

Climate change is a pervasive and growing global threat to the supply and demand of ecosystem goods and services that maintain human well-being. A recent review found that the impacts of climate change on ecosystem services are sometimes mixed, posing challenges for managers who need to adapt to these changes. We expand on earlier work by exploring drivers of varying responses of ecosystem services to climate within studies. We conducted a systematic review of English-language papers directly assessing climate change impacts on the supply, demand, or monetary value of ‘provisioning services’, ‘regulating services’, or ‘cultural services’. Ultimately, we extracted data from 44 papers published from December 2014...

Planktic foraminiferal species distributions in the modern ocean track environmental features like latitudinal temperature gradients. Species shift their distributions as the marine environment changes, providing an analog for past behavior. Stationarity of species’ ecological tolerances is a first-order assumption of all paleoenvironmental reconstructions based upon modern analog methods. We are testing the hypothesis that planktic foraminifer species temperature preferences did not change between the Late Pliocene and present by comparing relative abundance of selected species to independent Pliocene sea surface temperature estimates. In this data release we provide faunal census data from 72 Piacenzian age samples.

The data in this data release are from an effort focused on understanding social vulnerability to water insecurity, resiliency demonstrated by institutions, and conflict or crisis around water resource management. This data release focuses on definitions and metrics of resilience in water management institutions. Water resource managers, at various scales, are tasked with making complex and time-sensitive decisions in the face of uncertainty, competing objectives, and difficult tradeoffs. To do this, they must incorporate data, tacit knowledge, cultural and organizational norms, and individual or institutional values in a way that maintains consistent and predictable operations under normal circumstances, while...

The Monitoring Trends in Burn Severity (MTBS) Program assesses the frequency, extent, and magnitude (size and severity) of all large wildland fires (wildfires and prescribed fires) in the conterminous United States (CONUS), Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico for the period 1984 and beyond. All fires reported as greater than 1,000 acres in the western U.S. and greater than 500 acres in the eastern U.S. are mapped across all ownerships. MTBS produces a series of geospatial and tabular data for analysis at a range of spatial, temporal, and thematic scales and are intended to meet a variety of information needs that require consistent data about fire effects through space and time. This map layer is a thematic raster image...

The Mississippi Alluvial Plain (MAP) is one of the most important agricultural regions in the United States and underlies about 32,000 square miles of Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Arkansas. The MAP region supports a multibillion-dollar agricultural industry. The MAP is part of the Mississippi Embayment with several water-bearing units that make up the Mississippi Embayment Regional Aquifer System (MERAS). These water bearing units include the Mississippi River Valley Alluvial aquifer, Claiborne aquifers and Wilcox aquifers. Two areas in northeastern Arkansas, the Cache and Grand Prairie areas have been designated as critical groundwater areas because of decades of groundwater declines...

This dataset, VegDischarge v1, represents a significant contribution to the understanding of hydrological dynamics across Africa from 2000 to 2021. It encompasses high-resolution (1km x 1km) monthly raster data of deep drainage, surface runoff, and total runoff, derived from the VegET (VegetationEvapoTranspiration) hydrological model (Senay et al., 2023). Additionally, routed discharge data (Mizukami et al., 2021) for over 63,000 river segments is provided, employing different routing algorithms (DW, KW, KWT, MC, and IRF) to demonstrate variability in river discharge patterns. This comprehensive dataset is stored in NetCDF and Shapefile formats, offering valuable insights for policymakers, stakeholders, and researchers...

Radiogenic isotopes of strontium and uranium (87Sr/86Sr and 234U/238U) are useful tracers of water-rock interactions. Sr isotopic signatures in groundwater are derived by dissolution or exchange with Sr contained in aquifer rock whereas U isotopic signatures are more controlled by physicochemical and kinetic processes during groundwater flow. Insights into groundwater circulation patterns through the shallow subsurface at Yellowstone National Park can be aided by investigations of these isotopes. This data release contains tables with new isotope data consisting of concentrations (Sr, U) and radiogenic-isotope compositions (87Sr/86Sr, 234U/238U) for samples of thermal springs and geysers focused largely on the...

To observe real-time pier scour at three scour-critical sites in Idaho, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with Idaho Transportation Department, installed and operated fixed real-time (15-minute interval) bed elevation scour sonar sensors at three bridge locations associated with U.S. Geological Survey streamflow gaging stations for water years 2020 through 2022. Observed pier scour data during spring runoff (water years 2020–22) were compared to both Coarse Bed and Hydraulic Engineering Circular 18 (HEC-18) general pier scour design equation estimates to better understand how the observed pier scour data compared to design pier scour equation estimates during the same observational periods. As part of the...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with Scott Air Force Base (SAFB), Illinois, assessed the effects of temporal land-use development in the Silver Creek Basin, the potential effects of projected changes in future precipitation, and the effects of added detention storage in selected tributaries near SAFB. A hydrologic model was used to simulate precipitation runoff and streamflows for subbasins included in the Silver Creek Basin spanning 464 square miles upstream from the USGS streamgage at Freeburg, Ill. (USGS station 05594800; U.S. Geological Survey, 2023). A two-dimensional hydraulic model was used to simulate water-surface profiles and flood inundation extent of a localized area within the basin...
