The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with Colorado Springs Utilities, has been collecting topographic data annually since 2012 at 10 study areas along Fountain Creek, Colorado. The 10 study areas are located along Fountain Creek between Colorado Springs and the confluence of Fountain Creek and the Arkansas River in Pueblo. This data release presents topographic survey data, Light Detection and Ranging (lidar) survey data, elevation rasters, and elevation-change rasters collected or generated in 2024 as part of that monitoring effort. Topographic survey points were collected using real-time kinematic Global Navigation Satellite Systems (RTK-GNSS). These point data, along with lidar point clouds, were used to...

This data release makes available the data used to test a method for remote sensing of river discharge based on critical flow theory. In rivers where flow conditions are near critical and well-defined standing waves are present, simple measurements of the wavelengths of the standing waves and the width of the channel made using readily available image data can be used to infer river discharge. This approach could provide an efficient, non-contact method of estimating streamflow in certain rivers. Sites near established USGS gaging stations with standing waves (also known as undular hydraulic jumps) were identified by examining images within Google Earth Pro (https://www.google.com/earth/about/versions/#earth-pro)....

This data release contains inputs for and outputs from hydrologic simulations for the Hawai‘i (HI) domain using the Precipitation Runoff Modeling System (PRMS) version 5.2.1.1 for the precalibration, by Hydrologic Response Unit (byHRU) release, and by Point Of Interest Observation (byPOIobs) release using the USGS National Hydrologic Model infrastructure (NHM; Regan and others, 2018). These simulations were developed to provide estimates of the water budget for the calendar-year period 1980 to 2021, where the first two years are used for model initialization. Specific file types include: 1) input atmospheric forcings of minimum air temperature, maximum air temperature, and daily precipitation accumulation derived...

This data release contains the model inputs, outputs, and source code (written in R) for a redeveloped PRObability of Streamflow PERmanence (PROSPER) model (version 2.1) that had previously been developed for the Pacific Northwest Region (PROSPER_PNW_2), and a raster data set which shows where influential predictor values were outside the range of calibration data. The PROSPER-PNW version 2.1 model, a random forest model, was redeveloped in the Ranger R package using all the original model inputs consistent with PROSPER_PNW_2 to produce annual streamflow permanence probabilities for calendar years 2004-2016 at a 30-meter stream grid resolution that approximately corresponds to flowlines consistent with the National...

Human alteration of waterways has impacted the minimum and maximum streamflow in more than 86% of monitored streams nationally and may be the primary cause for ecological impairment in river and stream ecosystems. Restoration of freshwater inflows can positively affect shellfish, fisheries, habitat, and water quality in streams, rivers, and estuaries. Increasingly, state and local decision makers and Federal agencies are turning their attention to the restoration of flows as part of a holistic approach to restoring water quality and habitat and protecting and replenishing living coastal and marine resources and the livelihoods that depend on them. In 2017, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Lower Mississippi-Gulf...

The Integrated Water Availability Assessment uses an ensemble of outputs from two hydrologic models to assess water supply conditions. Results from the two models, the National Hydrologic Model Precipitation-Runoff Modeling System (NHM-PRMS) and Weather Research and Forecasting model hydrologic modeling system (WRF-Hydro) were averaged to create a single model ensemble. A unique instance of each model was developed specifically for this application (see the following data releases listed in the related external resources below: Sampson et al., 2024; Foks et al., 2025; Foks et al., 2024a-c). Each model was run at its native spatiotemporal resolution and converted to the subwatershed (12-digit hydrologic unit code;...

This data release provides satellite images used to test a method for inferring image acquisition time from shadow orientation. For many applications, such as linking remotely sensed data to streamflow recorded at a gaging station, knowing the time an image is acquired is important, but such metadata often is not available. The sundial method is a simple means of inferring image acquisition time from shadow orientation. Images with known acquisition times are used to test the approach. The file SundialDataRelease.csv contains image metadata, shadow measurements, and inferred image acquisition times based on the sundial method. The difference between the known acquisition times of the satellite images and those inferred...

The Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) is a nation of more than thirty low-lying atolls and islands, most of which are inhabited, dispersed across an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) over 770,000 square miles in the tropical central North Pacific Ocean. Monitoring environmental conditions for potential drought risk is challenging in such a dispersed Island nation, and current drought hazard products provide generalities regarding conditions on a broad geographic scale. A team of USGS scientists and managers of natural resources and natural hazards in the RMI used IMERG (Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM) satellite estimates of precipitation to develop content and a template for timely monthly reporting...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Uncrewed Systems Office (NUSO) supported the USGS National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program’s Geoheritage Sites of the Nation Project in July of 2024 with the collection of UAS-based high-resolution imagery of the Marsh-Felch Quarry site at the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Garden Park Fossil Area. One of the most complete dinosaur skeletons ever unearthed was found here. These discoveries around present-day Garden Park Fossil Area sparked the “Bone Wars” of the late 1800s and inspired the selection of Colorado's state fossil, the Stegosaurus. Three-dimensional (3D) scan flights were conducted at the fossil site using a Skydio X10 UAS, in which the aircraft autonomously...

The development and deployment of digital broadband seismographs provides the data required to rapidly assess earthquake size, determine source parameters and better characterize ground motions affecting earthquake hazard. The focus of regional moment tensor analysis is to estimate the moment magnitude, faulting parameters and source depth of earthquakes that are too small to be recorded teleseismically. Thus they have the potential of extending the earthquake catalog to magnitudes less than about M4-4.5. This data distribution provides the details required to critically review the resulting catalog, e.g., the waveforms used, processing parameters and velocity model. In addition the issue of the correct local magnitude...

This data release contains displacement and pore-water pressure data from a field experiment performed November 14, 2003, at Mount Kaba-san, Japan. This experiment generated a shallow landslide, induced by water infiltration from overhead sprinkling, that mobilized into a debris flow. More information about this experiment can be found in Ochiai and others (2004). Extensometer data recorded the ground-surface locations (displacement) and pressure transducers recorded dynamic pore-water pressures within the hillslope leading up to and through rapid failure. Data were recorded at a 100-Hz sampling frequency on a National Instruments data-acquisition system. The accompanying cross-sectional diagram (Japan_exp_cross-section.png)...

In 2014, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers collaborated with the U.S. Geological Survey to develop regional hydraulic geometry curves for the Boston Mountains in Arkansas. To accomplish this, fourteen stream reaches associated with stream flow-gaging stations operated by the U.S. Geological Survey were evaluated. These study reaches had contributing drainage basin areas ranging from 0.19 to 373 square miles. Comprehensive surveys and analyses were conducted to measure bankfull cross-sectional area, top width, mean depth, streamflow, and floodplain cross sections for these reaches. The collected data were then compared to drainage area to generate regional curves. Additionally, bed and bar material sampling was performed...
