Small lakes are important to local economies as sources of water supply and places of recreation. Commonly, lakes are considered more desirable for recreation if they are free of the thick weedy vegetation, often comprised of invasive species, that grows around the lake edge. This vegetation makes it difficult to launch boats and swim. In order to reduce this vegetation, a common technique in the Northeast and Midwest U.S. is a ‘winter drawdown’ . In a winter drawdown, the lake level is artificially lowered (via controls in a dam) during the winter to expose shoreline vegetation to freezing conditions, thereby killing them and preserving recreational value of the lake. However, this practice can impact both water...

Tribal resource managers in the southwest U.S. are facing a host of challenges related to environmental change, including increasing temperatures, longer periods of drought, and invasive species. These threats are exacerbating the existing challenges of managing complex ecosystems. In a rapidly changing environment, resource managers need powerful tools and the most complete information to make the most effective decisions possible. Traditional Ecological Knowledge has enabled Indigenous peoples to adaptively manage and thrive in diverse environments for thousands of years, yet it is generally underutilized and undervalued, particularly in the context of western scientific approaches. Traditional Ecological...

These are the results produce during the analysis and used in the report: Osnas, E.E. 2024. Steller’s Eider (Polysticta stelleri) population and density estimates from the Arctic Coastal Plain and UtqiaÄ¡vik Triangle surveys using generalized additive models. US Fish and Wildlife Service, Division of Migratory Bird Management, Anchorage, AK. Contain within are images (png), R objects or environments (.RDS and .RData), and posterior summaries of population size and trend (CSV). A brief description of each file can be found in the Readme.html file contained within the zipped folder.

Annual populations and spatial density estimates are needed for the threatened Alaska-breeding population of Steller’s eiders (Polysticta stelleri) to assess recovery status and guide recovery actions but these quantities are poorly estimated in this rare species using traditional methods. Therefore, population size and spatial variation in density were estimated across the Arctic Coastal Plain (ACP) and Utqiagvik Triangle (Triangle) survey areas using spatio-temporal generalized additive models and compared to traditional design-based estimates. Compared to design-based estimates, model-based estimates were more precise and less variable between years. Moreover, data sets can be combined to produce common estimates,...

The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with Colorado Springs Utilities, has been collecting topographic data annually since 2012 at 10 study areas along Fountain Creek, Colorado. The 10 study areas are located along Fountain Creek between Colorado Springs and the confluence of Fountain Creek and the Arkansas River in Pueblo. This data release presents topographic survey data, Light Detection and Ranging (lidar) survey data, elevation rasters, and elevation-change rasters collected or generated in 2024 as part of that monitoring effort. Topographic survey points were collected using real-time kinematic Global Navigation Satellite Systems (RTK-GNSS). These point data, along with lidar point clouds, were used to...
