Small lakes are important to local economies as sources of water supply and places of recreation. Commonly, lakes are considered more desirable for recreation if they are free of the thick weedy vegetation, often comprised of invasive species, that grows around the lake edge. This vegetation makes it difficult to launch boats and swim. In order to reduce this vegetation, a common technique in the Northeast and Midwest U.S. is a ‘winter drawdown’ . In a winter drawdown, the lake level is artificially lowered (via controls in a dam) during the winter to expose shoreline vegetation to freezing conditions, thereby killing them and preserving recreational value of the lake. However, this practice can impact both water...

Tribal resource managers in the southwest U.S. are facing a host of challenges related to environmental change, including increasing temperatures, longer periods of drought, and invasive species. These threats are exacerbating the existing challenges of managing complex ecosystems. In a rapidly changing environment, resource managers need powerful tools and the most complete information to make the most effective decisions possible. Traditional Ecological Knowledge has enabled Indigenous peoples to adaptively manage and thrive in diverse environments for thousands of years, yet it is generally underutilized and undervalued, particularly in the context of western scientific approaches. Traditional Ecological...

In the Rocky Mountains of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (United States), recent melting at a high-elevation (3,091 m asl) ice patch exposed a mature stand of whitebark pine (Pinus albicaulis) trees located ~180 m above modern treeline dating to the mid-Holocene (c. 5,900-5,436 cal y BP +- 51 y). From this subfossil wood record, we contextualize the recent magnitude of warming relative to mid-Holocene conditions and reconstruct changes in climate that resulted in regional ice patch growth and reductions in treeline elevation. Specifically, we developed tree-ring based temperature estimates for subalpine treeline and compare and contextualize this record against a mid-Holocene-to-present (ca., 7,000 to 100 cal....

Precipitation, volumetric soil-water content, videos, and geophone data characterizing postfire debris flows were collected at the 2022 Hermit’s Peak Calf-Canyon Fire in New Mexico. This dataset contains data from June 22, 2022, to June 26, 2024. The data were obtained from a station located at 35° 42’ 28.86” N, 105° 27’ 18.03” W (geographic coordinate system). Each data type is described below. Raw Rainfall Data: Rainfall data, Rainfall.csv, are contained in a comma separated value (.csv) file. The data are continuous and sampled at 1-minute intervals. The columns in the csv file are TIMESTAMP(UTC), RainSlowInt (the depth of rain in each minute [mm]), CumRain (cumulative rainfall since the beginning of the record...

These data represent a Global Positioning System (GPS) survey generated using a Trimble R10 Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) and Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS). The survey extends along the Cedar River streambed in Cedar Falls, Iowa, where a wastewater treatment diffuser pipe is installed. Cross-sectional representations were produced to depict stream depth and streambed elevation. Cross-sectional data should be interpreted from a downstream perspective.

Annual populations and spatial density estimates are needed for the threatened Alaska-breeding population of Steller’s eiders (Polysticta stelleri) to assess recovery status and guide recovery actions but these quantities are poorly estimated in this rare species using traditional methods. Therefore, population size and spatial variation in density were estimated across the Arctic Coastal Plain (ACP) and Utqiagvik Triangle (Triangle) survey areas using spatio-temporal generalized additive models and compared to traditional design-based estimates. Compared to design-based estimates, model-based estimates were more precise and less variable between years. Moreover, data sets can be combined to produce common estimates,...
