John Kinnison earned his master's in geology from the University of Arizona in 1958. He spent over twelve years with ASARCO. He was a consultant to the mining industry from 1973 to the early 1980s. He specialized in porphyry copper exploration in the Southwest U.S., but also worked in Mexico, Canada and the Western U.S., exploring base and precious metal veins and replacements, uranium, mercury, and gold placers. His professional work included management, target generation, ore reserves and mine evaluation. He had a professional history of general exploration, mine geology, sampling methods, surface mapping, extensive reconnaissance observation and mapping, and successful exploration for new ore deposits. The collection...

This collection consists of samples with age data and associated information for available radiometric dates for rocks and minerals in Alaska. The sample records and their associated publications were loaded into the Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys division-wide database. A legacy Microsoft Access database exists that includes dates for all available U-Pb, K-Ar, 40Ar/39Ar, and Rb-Sr data for Alaska through 2007. Previous compilations by Wilson and others (1990) and U.S. Geological Survey (1999) provided the initial source of age data. Additional radiometric dates were compiled from both published and unpublished sources. This legacy project added essential basic supporting information that...

This collection represents field station locations digitized from legacy field station maps, geologic interpretive maps, analytical reports and field notes. The points were on-screen digitized from scanned, georegistered station location maps using georegistration best practices and ESRI ArcMap software or digitized via data entry from field notes and reports. Most records indicate the geologist, field project and year collected based on the information available about the archived item or from interviews with current and former DGGS geologists and database research.

This collection consists of a wide range of mineral resource related items. It includes detailed and summary reports, memoranda, correspondence, notes, maps, and other documents. The documents were produced by former staff working for theTennessee Geological Survey, United States Geological Survey, and Tennessee Valley Authority. As of 2015 nearly all of the items in the collection located in the Knoxville Field Office have been reviewed and scanned, and are included in the metadata records here. The documents are all available in digital format as Portable Document Format (PDF) files. High resolution tagged image format (tif) files are available for the large plates. Currently all of the original documents...
The Silica Collection consists of descriptions for 51 outcrop samples collected as part of an evaluation of potential high-silica resources in the western region of Virginia. Sampling was conducted in conjunction with reconnaissance field mapping to determine the extent of high-silica deposits. The record for each sample consists of a physical description, location information, sieve analysis, and chemical test data. The results of laboratory analyses are included in several published reports including DGMR Publications 32, 67 and Mineral Resources Report 11.

The Florida Geological Survey (FGS) maintains a collection of geologic samples from throughout Florida. This includes core samples from boreholes drilled by the FGS as well as those received from the drilling of water production wells, monitor wells, injection wells, and stratigraphic testing boreholes. The core sample collection currently includes: continuous core (CCR); Standard Penetration Test (SPT) samples; individual core segments (COR); core chips (CHP); rotosonic core (RTS); and vibracore (VBC). The collection also includes samples that are from the secondary analysis of core specimens, which we have catalogued as “secondary samples” (SAS) and “representative samples” (REP), which are often sediment or...

The Florida Geological Survey (FGS) maintains a collection of geologic samples from throughout Florida. This includes cuttings samples recovered from drilling in the rock below the softer surficial sediments of Florida at intervals of 5, 10 or 20 ft. The FGS cuttings collection contains both washed and unwashed samples. Clay samples can easily be washed away when processing samples, so an unwashed set is kept for all samples. Samples are stored by interval in paper sample envelopes which are then stored in cardboard boxes. The collection includes over 39,000 boxes, which each hold an average of 380 ft per box. We have an estimated 13.1 million feet of cuttings in our collection, ranging from shallow sample sets...

This collection consists of written descriptions of lithologies encountered during the drilling phase of various coal exploration programs in Tennessee. Descriptions range from detailed to brief. Information obtained primarily from diamond core drilling with additional information from rotary drilling and e-logs. Drill hole depths range from tens to thousands of feet deep. Individual drill holes were originally located by using the Tennessee State Plane Coordinate System (NAD 27). Quadrangles with abundant drill holes have accompanying drill hole location maps.
