Hydrothermally altered rocks, particularly if water saturated, can weaken stratovolcanoes, thereby increasing the potential for catastrophic sector collapses that can lead to far-traveled, destructive debris flows, which are the largest volcanic hazards for Mount Adams and Mount Baker. Evaluating the hazards associated with such alteration is difficult because much of the alteration is obscured by ice and its depth extent is unknown. Intense hydrothermal alteration significantly reduces the resistivity and magnetization of volcanic rock and therefore hydrothermally altered rocks are identified with helicopter electromagnetic and magnetic measurements at Mount Baker and Mount Adams. High resolution magnetic and electromagnetic...

The files consist of two types: tabulated data files and graphical map files. Data files consist of six .csv files, representing six experiment dates (2016_06_14, 2016_16_15, 2016_18_15, 2016_16_21, 2016_16_22, 2016_16_23). Each of these files contains multiple columns of data, with each column representing either a time measurement or the value of a physical quantity measured at that time (e.g., flow depth, pore pressure, normal stress, etc.). Map files consist of six .pdf files, each representing an experiment date listed above. The maps show the thickness of the sediment deposited onto the runout pad after each experiment. Sediment thickness was determined using photogrammetery software from Adam Technology.

This dataset contains reflectance and transmission spectra of unexpanded and expanded vermiculite ore, and handpicked flakes of phlogopite, hydrobiotite, and vermiculite. These samples were collected from mines near Enoree, South Carolina; Libby, Montana; Louisa, Virginia; Palabora, Llano, Texas; and South Africa. Spectra are identified as either reflectance or transmission in the alphanumeric file names and correlate to specpr record numbers designated in the manuscript figures in which they are shown. These transmission spectra were converted to absorbance in many of the figures. Spectra of talc, fibrous richterite amphibole, and serpentine are from well characterized samples from Feiser Mine, Ruby Mountains,...
Future climates are simulated by general circulation models (GCM) using climate change scenarios (IPCC 2014). To project climate change for the sagebrush biome, we used 11 GCMs and two climate change scenarios from the IPCC Fifth Assessment, representative concentration pathways (RCPs) 4.5 and 8.5 (Moss et al. 2010, Van Vuuren et al. 2011). RCP4.5 scenario represents a future where climate policies limit and achieve stabilization of greenhouse gas concentrations to 4.5 W m-2 by 2100. RCP8.5 scenario might be called a business-as-usual scenario, where high emissions of greenhouse gases continue in the absence of climate change policies. The two selected time frames allow comparison of near-term (2020-2050) and longer-term...

Subduction zones are home to the most seismically active faults on the planet. The shallow megathrust interface of subduction zones host our largest earthquakes, and are the only faults capable of M9+ ruptures. Despite these facts, our knowledge of subduction zone geometry - which likely plays a key role in determining the spatial extent and ultimately the size of subduction zone earthquakes - is incomplete. Here we calculate the three- dimensional geometries of all active global subduction zones. The resulting model - Slab2 - provides for the first time a comprehensive geometrical analysis of all known slabs in unprecedented detail.

This dataset is based on U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) resource assessments for “undiscovered” natural gas liquid resources, which are resources that have not yet been extensively proven by drilling (USGS 2014). Individual resource assessments describe the amount of petroleum resources in units with similar geologic features. We quantified the density of natural gas liquid resources by adding together the amounts in spatially overlapping assessment units and dividing these totals by polygon areas. Since assessments for geologic areas used in this analysis were completed at various times, the certainty related to these values is likely to vary according to geologic unit. These feature data are part of a larger dataset containing shapefiles and associated metadata for lava flows erupted at Kilauea volcano from ca. 1790 through 1982. The complete dataset includes all known subaerial eruptions in the volcano's Southwest Rift Zone and East Rift Zone, and selected flows erupted within the summit caldera, during this time period. Two attributed shapefiles are associated with each eruption: a polyline shapefile for the lava flow contacts and eruptive fissures, and a polygon shapefile showing the full extent of the lava flow after emplacement. In total, this dataset contains 100 shapefiles, each with an associated metadata .txt file, representing 50 separate eruptions. The lava flow contacts...

This dataset provides the results of an assessment of estuary habitat condition in the conterminous United States. To analyze estuary condition, a cumulative disturbance index was developed based on habitat stressor variable data available at a national scale for anthropogenic disturbances measured within estuaries and their associated watersheds. Twenty-eight variables were combined within stressor categories to develop four sub-indices of disturbance for land use, alterations of river flows, pollution sources, and estuary eutrophication. These four sub-indices of disturbance were then combined to develop cumulative disturbance index scores for each estuary. This index describes the estimated combined stress on...

From 2013 to 2015, bathymetric surveys of New York City’s six West of Hudson reservoirs (Ashokan, Cannonsville, Neversink, Pepacton, Rondout, and Schoharie) were performed to provide updated capacity tables and bathymetric maps. Depths were surveyed with a single-beam echo sounder and real-time kinematic global positioning system (RTK-GPS) along planned transects at predetermined intervals for each reservoir. A separate set of echo sounder data was collected along transects at oblique angles to the main transects for accuracy assessment. Field survey data was combined with water-surface elevations in a geographic information system to create three-dimensional surfaces representing reservoir-bed elevations in the...

The Simeulue cluster is named for the island of Simeulue off the north coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. The cluster is based on 33 events recorded by a temporary network of OBS's from October 2005 to February 2006 to record aftershocks of the Mw 8.6 earthquake of March 28, 2005 (Nias-Simeulue), which was itself probably triggered by the great Sumatra earthquake of December 26, 2004 (Mw 9.1). The Nias-Simeulue earthquake is included in the cluster. Readings from the OBS network (kindly provided by Frederick Tilmann, GFZ Potsdam) provide the calibration of the cluster, which was expanded with moderate-sized events since 2006 to improve the set of teleseismic arrival time data. Many events in the cluster have good datasets...
The Caldiran cluster is named after the town of Cadiran in the district of Van, Turkey. This cluster consists of 83 events, including the magnitude 7.3 Caldiran earthquake on November 24, 1976 and five of its aftershocks, as well as several recent moderate magnitude events in 2000s, the largest being the magnitude 5.1 October 20, 2003 earthquake. A. Ghods repicked many of the arrival times from Iranian networks, including S-P data from the INSM network of accelerometers (BHRC). Focal depths of 24 events are set with near-distance picks, and 44 are constrained with local-distance picks. The remaining events in the cluster are held at a default depth of 12 km. ...
Field measurements of various optical properties of the water column were acquired from a single location on the Kootenai River in northern Idaho, September 26-27, 2017, to support research on remote sensing of rivers, particularly estimation of water depth from passive optical image data. The field measurements included in this data release include several parameters measured with three different instruments. A WetLabs EcoTriplet multi-probe was used to measure the volume scattering coefficient (Beta) at 700 nm, the back-scattering coefficient (b_b) at 700 nm, chlorophyll concentration, colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) concentration, and turbidity. A Sequoia Scientific LISST-100X was used to measure the...

This part of DS 781 presents data for bathymetry for several seafloor maps of the Offshore of Point Conception Map Area, California. The vector data file is included in "BathymetryHS_OffshorePointConception.zip," which is accessible from https://doi.org/10.5066/F7QN64XQ. Shaded-relief bathymetry of the Offshore of Point Conception map area in southern California was generated largely from acoustic-bathymetry data collected by Fugro Pelagos Inc. Acoustic mapping was completed in 2008 using a combination of 400-kHz Reson 7125, 240-kHz Reson 8101, and 100-kHz Reson 8111 multibeam echosounders. Bathymetric-lidar data was collected in the nearshore area by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Joint Lidar Bathymetry...
A compilation of all known nest records and locations to identify landscape-scale parameters (distance to coast, elevation, slope, and land cover) that provide potential nesting habitat in four regions: northern Alaska, Aleutian Islands, Alaska Peninsula Mountains and Kodiak Island, and Pacific Coastal Mountains (including nearshore interior Canada). These data support the following publication: Felis J.J., Kissling M.L., Kaler R.S.A., Kenney L.A., Lawonn M.J., 2016. Identifying Kittlitz’s Murrelet nesting habitat in North America at the landscape scale. Journal of Fish and Wildlife Management 7(2):xx-xx; e1944-687X. doi: 10.3996/112015-JFWM-116
