*Note: Layer has been updated, please see the newest version Delineates outbreaks of the two focal species referred to as aspen defoliators (large aspen torix and forest tent caterpillar). Covers the CCE and 5km into the surrounding area from 2000 to 2007. This layer is a compilation from multiple sources, Bruce spanworm polygons were removed from Alberta data, focal species were extracted from USDA data. This dataset was developed as part of a long-term project monitoring the ecological health of the Crown of the Continent Ecosystem (CCE). This effort is a collaborative project between National Park Service Rocky Mountain Inventory and Monitoring Network (ROMN) (Landscape Dynamics Vital Sign), Crown Managers Partnership,...

This shape file represents an ecological boundary for the Crown of the Continent Ecosystem (CCE) as defined by the Crown Managers Partnership (CMP). The CMP developed the boundary through a series of meetings held in 2008, including a meeting between the CMP and non government organizations working in the Crown on July 23, 2008. The purpose of this exercise was to develop an ecological justification for the CCE, to enable analysis and tracking of the ecosystem from an ecological health perspective. The CMP notes that this extent does not represent the true economic, social and cultural impact on the CCE from surrounding urban areas. In Alberta the eastern boundary was delineated by the Foothills Fescue Subregion...

Urban development alters stormflow characteristics and is associated with increasing flood risks. The long-term evaluation of stormflow characteristics that exacerbate floods, such as peak stormflow and time-to-peak stormflow at varying levels of urbanization across different hydroclimates, is limited. This study investigated the long-term (1980s to 2010s) effects of increasing urbanization on key stormflow characteristics using observed 15 min streamflow data across six broad hydroclimate representative urban watersheds in the conterminous United States. The results indicate upward trends in peak stormflow and downward trends in time-to-peak stormflow at four out of six watersheds. The watershed in the Great Plains...

High-latitude regions are experiencing rapid and extensive changes in ecosystem composition and function as the result of increases in average air temperature. Increasing air temperatures have led to widespread thawing and degradation of permafrost, which in turn has affected ecosystems, socioeconomics, and the carbon cycle of high latitudes. Here we overcome complex interactions among surface and subsurface conditions to map near-surface permafrost through decision and regression tree approaches that statistically and spatially extend field observations using remotely sensed imagery, climatic data, and thematic maps of a wide range of surface and subsurface biophysical characteristics. The data fusion approach...

Spatially explicit forest carbon (C) monitoring aids conservation and climate change mitigation efforts, yet few approaches have been developed specifically for the highly heterogeneous landscapes of oceanic island chains that continue to undergo rapid and extensive forest C change. We developed an approach for rapid mapping of aboveground C density (ACD; units = Mg or metric tons C ha−1) on islands at a spatial resolution of 30 m (0.09 ha) using a combination of cost-effective airborne LiDAR data and full-coverage satellite data. We used the approach to map forest ACD across the main Hawaiian Islands, comparing C stocks within and among islands, in protected and unprotected areas, and among forests dominated by...

Separate data for floodplain elevation and bathymetry were collected on the Upper Mississippi River System (UMRS) by the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Upper Mississippi River Restoration (UMRR) program. While many information needs can be met by using these data separately, in many cases seamless elevation data across the river and its floodplain are needed. This seamless elevation surface was generated by merging lidar (i.e., floodplain elevation) and bathymetry data. Merging the data required special processing in the areas of transition between the two sources of data.

Drylands cover 40% of the global terrestrial surface and provide important ecosystem services. While drylands as a whole are expected to increase in distribution and aridity in coming decades, temperature and precipitation forecasts vary by latitude and geographic region suggesting different trajectories for tropical, subtropical, and temperate drylands. Uncertainty in the future of tropical and subtropical drylands is well constrained, whereas soil moisture and ecological droughts, which drive vegetation productivity and composition, remain poorly understood in temperate drylands. Here we show that, over the 21st century, temperate drylands may contract by a third, primarily converting to subtropical drylands,...

This item has two datasets which provide information over the entire CCE: 1. MPB_AB_5kmBuffer_2000.shp: Mountain Pine Beetle (MPB) disturbance in the Alberta portion of the Crown of the Continent Ecosystem from 2001 to 2007. This layer is a compilation from multiple sources. These data are used to help focus ground survey work and are not 100% accurate. 2. MPB_CCE_5kmBuffer_2000: This layer represents polygons within and up to 5km outside the British Columbia and Montana portions of the Crown of the Continent Ecosystem with groupings of dead (red) pine trees which indicate a high likelihood of green attack mountain pine beetle trees from 2001 to 2007. The current beetle year (August 15 to August 15) Mountain Pine...
Previous research identified species of invasive plants in Hawai'i which are highly flammable and act as fuels in wildfires across Hawai'i. This work aimed to map the distribution of these species (largely grasses) around the islands of Hawai'i with the goal of using the locations for species distribution modeling. All data represents presence data, no absence data were recorded. Data are largely from within the past 20 years, but some georeferenced herbarium specimens go as far back as 1905. Data were obtained from georeferenced herbarium specimens, vegetation plot data, citizen science data (iNaturalist) reviewed by the authors, and data from roadside surveys conducted as part of this research to map these species....

Organic carbon (OC) burial in lacustrine sediments represents an important sink in the global carbon cycle; however, large-scale OC burial rates are poorly constrained, primarily because of the sparseness of available data sets. Here we present an analysis of OC burial rates in water bodies of the conterminous U.S. (CONUS) that takes advantage of recently developed national-scale data sets on reservoir sedimentation rates, sediment OC concentrations, lake OC burial rates, and water body distributions. We relate these data to basin characteristics and land use in a geostatistical analysis to develop an empirical model of OC burial in water bodies of the CONUS. Our results indicate that CONUS water bodies sequester...

We quantified baseline and projected change in wildlife habitat, soil organic carbon (SOC), and water supply (recharge and runoff). For six case study watersheds we quantified the interactions of future development and changing climate on recharge, runoff and streamflow, and precipitation thresholds where dominant watershed hydrological processes shift through analysis of covariance.

This assessment was conducted to fulfill the requirements of section 712 of the Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) of 2007 and to improve understanding of carbon and greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes in the Great Plains region in the central part of the United States. The assessment examined carbon storage, carbon fluxes, and other GHG fluxes (methane and nitrous oxide) in all major terrestrial ecosystems (forests, grasslands/shrublands, agricultural lands, and wetlands) and freshwater aquatic systems (rivers, streams, lakes, and impoundments) in two time periods: baseline (generally in the first half of the 2010s) and future (projections from baseline to 2050). The assessment was based on measured and observed...

We took hemispherical photographs (hemiphotos) at each camera station to estimate incoming shortwave radiation. We used a Canon EOS 70D SLR camera with a Sigma 8mm circular fisheye lens. We took hemiphotos on days with little to no wind or precipitation and early in the morning (5AM – 7AM), late in the evening (7PM – 9PM), or on overcast days to maximize the contrast between sky and vegetation. We took hemiphotos in June - July 2021, but nine camera sites were re-photographed in October 2021 due to poor quality of initial photographs. Overstory deciduous vegetation is rare at the study site, so summer changes in canopy cover are negligible. At each camera site, we placed the DSLR camera with attached lens on a tripod...
