WaSSI (Water Supply Stress Index) predicts how climate, land cover, and human population change may impact water availability and carbon sequestration at the watershed level (about the size of a county) across the lower 48 United States. WaSSI users can select and adjust temperature, precipitation, land cover, and water use factors to simulate change scenarios for any timeframe from 1961 through the year 2100. Simulation results are available as downloadable maps, graphs, and data files that users can apply to their unique information and project needs. WaSSI generates useful information for natural resource planners and managers who must make informed decisions about water supplies and related ecosystem services...

In large river ecosystems, the timing, extent, duration and frequency of floodplain inundation greatly affect the quality of fish and wildlife habitat and the supply of important ecosystem goods and services. Seasonal high flows provide connectivity from the river to the floodplain, and seasonal inundation of the floodplain governs ecosystem structure and function. River regulation and other forms of hydrologic alteration have altered the connectivity of many rivers with their adjacent floodplain – impacting the function of wetlands on the floodplain and in turn, impacting the mainstem river function. Conservation and management of remaining floodplain resources can be improved through a better understanding of...

The download for this dataset includes TNC’s full Northeastern Aquatic Habitat Classification System: stream size, stream temperature, stream gradient, stream geology, lakes and catchments. This dataset represents the results (9/30/2008) of the Northeastern Aquatic Habitat Classification System (NAHCS) GIS map for streams and rivers. This classification focused on mapping a stream habitat types across 13 northeastern states (ME, NH, VT, MA, CT, RI, NY, NJ, PA, MD, DC, DE, VA, WV). Stream and river centerlines were extracted from the USGS National Hydrography Dataset Plus (NH-Plus) 2006 1:100,000 data. These reaches were attributed and placed into classes representing their biopysical setting in terms of stream...

NOTE - This map contains two datasets: "Important Anadromous Fish Habitat, Northeast U.S." and "Atlantic Salmon Rearing Areas, Maine"These dataset are part of a suite of products from the Nature’s Network project (naturesnetwork.org). Nature’s Network is a collaborative effort to identify shared priorities for conservation in the Northeast, considering the value of fish and wildlife species and the natural areas they inhabit. "Important Anadromous Fish Habitat" and “Atlantic Salmon Rearing Areas, Maine” are two input used in developing “Lotic Core Areas, Stratified by Watershed, Northeast U.S.” that is also part of Nature’s Network. Lotic core areas represent intact, well-connected rivers and stream reaches in...

Hydrography represents stream centerlines and off centerlines with greater than 30 hectare flow accumulation for the Northeast region. This dataset was developed as part of the Designing Sustainable Landscapes project led by Professor Kevin McGarigal of the University of Massachusetts and sponsored by the North Atlantic Landscape Conservation Cooperative; for more information about the entire project see: http://www.umass.edu/landeco/research/dsl/dsl.html The purpose of this dataset is to improve the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) for the Northeast region. The NHD is a national framework for assigning reach addresses to water-related entities, such as industrial discharges, drinking water supplies, fish habitat...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has estimated water use for the United States every 5 years since 1950. Estimates are provided for groundwater and surface-water sources, for fresh and saline water quality, and by sector or category of use. Estimates have been made at the State level since 1950, and at the county level since 1985. Water-use estimates by watershed were made from 1950 through 1995, first at the water-resources region level (HUC2), and later at the hydrologic cataloging unit level (HUC8). Understanding streamflow dynamics, watershed systems, and their relation to terrain characteristics is essential for describing and planning water supply, water use, and related land use activities. With data from...

The objective of this classification was to create a simplified set of stream and river habitat types based on the Northeast Aquatic Habitat Classification System (Olivero and Anderson 2008) and GIS map for 13 northeastern states (ME, NH, VT, MA, RI, CT, NY, PA, NJ, DE, MD, VA, WV, and DC.) that could be used in the Northeast Stream and River Habitat Guide (available at http://nature.ly/HabGuide). The goal was to collapse the existing 258 types down to ~25 types for reporting in the habitat guide. The habitat guide contains a description of each stream and river type, a distribution map, a photo, associated common and rare species, a crosswalk to state aquatic community types, and a summary of current condition...

These data consist of Level 1 field-verified, field-verified (F-V) with supplemental data, and remotely-sensed (potential) vernal pool locations submitted to the Vernal Pool Data Cooperative (VPDC) by cooperators from Delaware, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Quebec, and Vermont. Data submitted to the VPDC were subject to any of three data restriction categories established by the original data source. The complete report associated with this project is included in the download of this data, it can also be downloaded separately under the Attachments tab below. The data restriction categories are:Level 1:Unrestricted– Available for visualization and download through the NALCC Conservation Planning Atlas;Level...
This dataset is one of a suite of products from the Nature’s Network project (naturesnetwork.org). Nature’s Network is a collaborative effort to identify shared priorities for conservation in the Northeast, considering the value of fish and wildlife species and the natural areas they inhabit. Brook Trout probability of occurrence is intended to provide predictions of occupancy (probability of presence) for catchments smaller than 200 km2 in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic region from Virginia to Maine. The dataset provides predictions under current environmental conditions and for future increases in stream temperature. Brook Trout probability of occurrence (under current climate) is one input used in developing...
Collection of 3 assessments for Mainstem Big Rivers. The Condition Index ranks stream segments according to how well they meet the Desired State described qualitatively and quantitatively in the draft Integrated Science Agenda (v4). From the Condition Index 2 assessments are derived that rank opportunities for management and restoration of conditions included in the Condition Index – In-stream habitat diversity (also related to flow), and floodplain/riparian conditions. In-stream management opportunities are based on watershed-level (HUC12) scores for habitat diversity, sinuosity and impoundment conditions such that river segments meeting all desired states are considered Maintenance opportunities (values 5-6)....
Forest cores are derived by applying an inverse buffer (-100m) to forest patches to represent the area of contiguous interior forest habitat. Forest patches are defined as areas of contiguous natural cover bound by non-natural edge or linear fragmenting features (roads, railroads, transmission lines, natural gas pipelines). The following land cover types were selected from the 2006 National Land Cover Database (NLCD) to define “natural cover”: deciduous forest, coniferous forest, mixed [deciduous-coniferous] forest, scrub-shrub, woody wetland, and emergent wetland. Forest patches were delineated based on non-forest edge (from the NLCD) and the following linear fragmenting features:electric transmission lines (from...

The purpose of this data set is support resource allocation decisions (i.e. where to invest conservation effort) within the Gulf Coastal Plains and Ozarks Landscape Conservation Cooperative. It represents a relative ranking of HUC12 watersheds according to the quantity and quality of habitat as described in the GCPO LCC’s draft Integrated Science Agenda (v4). Watersheds (HUC12) were ranked by calculating the length-weighted average Management Opportunity scores within them. Because the 3 actions are identical for Med/Low-gradient Streams & Rivers of the coastal plains and Upland Streams & Rivers, (and because some watersheds contain both system types), we considered these systems simultaneously and calculated only...
