The capacity of ecosystems to provide services such as carbon storage, clean water, and forest products is determined not only by variations in ecosystem properties across landscapes, but also by ecosystem dynamics over time. ForWarn is a system developed by the U.S. Forest Service to monitor vegetation change using satellite imagery for the continental United States. It provides near real-time change maps that are updated every eight days, and summaries of these data also provide long-term change maps from 2000 to the present.Based on the detection of change in vegetation productivity, the ForWarn system monitors the effects of disturbances such as wildfires, insects, diseases, drought, and other effects of weather,...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has estimated water use for the United States every 5 years since 1950. Estimates are provided for groundwater and surface-water sources, for fresh and saline water quality, and by sector or category of use. Estimates have been made at the State level since 1950, and at the county level since 1985. Water-use estimates by watershed were made from 1950 through 1995, first at the water-resources region level (HUC2), and later at the hydrologic cataloging unit level (HUC8). Understanding streamflow dynamics, watershed systems, and their relation to terrain characteristics is essential for describing and planning water supply, water use, and related land use activities. With data from...

This dataset features suitable depth (0.2 m ≤ depth ≤ 2.0 m) at discharges from 15,000 cfs to 100,000 cfs. The spatial extent for floodplain inundation modeling in the lower Trinity River was from Romayor, Texas, to approximately Moss Bluff, Texas. River sections were modeled using steady flow conditions. For the upper section, discharge and stage were both available for the two gages (Romayor USGS 08066500 and Liberty USGS 08067000). For the lower section, the Moss Bluff gage (USGS 08067100) is tidally-influenced, so gage height didn’t correspond to upstream changes in discharge. Depth rasters were exported from HEC-RAS 5.0.0. Since the lower section had large over- and underestimates, depth values were sampled...

Topock Marsh is a large wetland adjacent to the Colorado River and main feature of Havasu National Wildlife Refuge (Havasu NWR) in southern Arizona. In 2010, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and Bureau of Reclamation began a project to improve water management capabilities at Topock Marsh and protect habitats and species. Initial construction required a drawdown, which caused below-average inflows and water depths in 2010-2011. Co-applicants Daniels and Haegele of FORT monitored Topock Marsh during the drawdown and immediately after, thus obtained information on immediate effects. However, stress from the drawdown may have a delayed effect on aquatic resources; additionally, significant changes to the infrastructure...

Base data layers (e.g., land cover, imagery and boundaries.) intended to orient users of the Multi-LCC Mississippi River Basin/Gulf Hypoxia Initiative’s Conservation Blueprint.
Dead and downed wood in any forest serves an important ecological function with regards to decomposition and nutrient cycling in forest ecosystems. It also provides critical habitat for many reptile and amphibian species, such as the red-backed salamander (Plethodon cinereus), in addition to providing an important food source for insects and detritivores upon which many other species in the system depend. The GCPO LCC Integrated Science Agenda (ISA) targets density of down wood around one 6’ dead/down log of ≥8” dbh per acre, essentially saying that on every acre there needs to be at least one sizable down log. The U.S. Forest Service (USFS) Forest Inventory and Analysis program does not collect plot-level data...

These layers represent estimates of imputed tree density calculated as part of the ecological assessment of upland hardwood systems. The GCPO Integrated Science Agenda targets tree densities of around 40 trees/acre for upland hardwood woodland systems and around 80 trees/acre for upland hardwood forest systems. These metrics should be correlates with target endpoints of basal area and canopy cover, though not entirely synonymous. We again used plot-level FIA data imputed across the GCPO LCC to assess tree density. However, it was challenging to identify and map the very limited acreage amounts meeting exactly this target in upland hardwood woodlands and forest. We therefore assessed the mean tree density within...

This indicator depicts the number of different stream size classes in a river network not separated by large dams. Reason for Selection River networks with a variety of connected stream classes help retain aquatic biodiversity in a changing climate by allowing species to access climate refugia and move between habitats. Input Data – Estimated Floodplain Map of the Conterminous U.S. from the EPA EnviroAtlas (see this factsheet for more information) – Other input for this indicator was provided by the Southeast Aquatic Connectivity Assessment Project (SEACAP). SEACAP identifies this metric within the category of “size/system type”. It measures the number different stream size classes in each functional network. To...

An estimated value for the ability of managers to dirct actions to protect, restore, or mitigate species and habitats. We recognize that our preliminary estimates are arbitrary and fairly approximate, but argue that making these explicit within a framework will enable stakeholders and managers to conduct subsequent analyses to better support their decision making.
We developed a composite land cover approach for use in the GCPO LCC ecological assessment of upland hardwood woodlands and forests. These datasets reflect the upland hardwood “mask” that represents the composite of 3 or 4 datasets, from which the remaining landscape endpoints defined in the LCC Integrated Science Agenda will be evaluated. The mask indicates where on the landscape we estimate upland hardwood woodlands and forests to be found in any condition. We first resampled 30 m 2011 GAP ecological systems land cover and Florida Cooperative Land Cover version 3.1, as well as 10 m Texas and Oklahoma Ecological Systems Mapping land cover data to 250 m using a nearest neighbor algorithm. The assessment was conducted...

This data product contains estimates of habitat quality for mule deer. The analysis area was a 236,000 square kilometers that encompassed the Navajo Nation, which includes portions of Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah. The estimates of habitat quality were created with spatially explicit habitat variables and either an expert-based linear combination process (for mountain lion and mule deer) or a generalized linear mixed model-based estimation that used radio-collar telemetry data (for desert bighorn sheep, black bear, and pronghorn; collected between 2005-2011). Habitat variables varied among species but included vegetation type, terrain ruggedness, topographic position index (TPI), road density, distance to water,...

U.S. Geological Survey Fort Collins Science Center (FORT) scientists collected an assemblage of biotic, abiotic, and hydrologic data from Topock Marsh during the drawdown and immediately after, thus obtaining valuable information needed by FWS. Building upon that work,...

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) provides impartial and independent data on the nation’s energy infrastructure, its sources, flows, and end uses, as well as forecasts and outlooks. Location information for specific extraction activities, as well as power plants and other supply chain components, can help reveal the regional nature of specific impacts and the often large distances between those effects and end-use drivers. This is a point dataset representing operating surface and underground coal mines in the United States in 2012. These data originate from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, Form EIA-7A “Coal Production and Preparation Report” and the U.S. Department of Labor, Mine Safety...

Our objective was to model mean annual number of zero-flow days (days per year) for small streams in the Upper Colorado River Basin under historic hydrologic conditions on small, ungaged streams in the Upper Colorado River Basin. Modeling streamflows is an important tool for understanding landscape-scale drivers of flow and estimating flows where there are no gaged records. We focused our study in the Upper Colorado River Basin, a region that is not only critical for water resources but also projected to experience large future climate shifts toward a drier climate. We used a random forest modeling approach to model the relation between zero-flow days per year on gaged streams (115 gages) and environmental variables....
