Chapter 2 presents and comments on some long-run properties of geophysical records and in particular tests the validity of an empirical law Harold Edwin Hurst discovered during his preliminary studies for the future Aswan High dam (Hurst, 1951, 1956; Hurst and others, 1965). We show that this law must be amended, tightened, and hedged, but its essential claim is confirmed. Published in Fractals in the Earth Sciences, in 1969.
Boreal toads (Bufo b. boreas) are widely distributed over much of the mountainous western United States. Populations in the Southern Rocky Mountains suffered extensive declines in the late 1970s through early 1980s (Carey, 1993). At the time, these mass mortalities were thought to be associated with a bacterial infection (Carey, 1993). Although the few populations that survived the mass die-offs were not systematically monitored until at least 1993, no mass mortalities had been observed until 1996 when die-offs were observed. A mycotic skin infection associated with a chytrid fungus is now causing mortality of toads in at least two of the populations (M.S. Jones and D.E. Green, unpublished data; Muths et al., 2003)....

Prairie dog populations have declines by about 98% over the last 200 years because of recreational shooting, poisoning, loss of habitat, and plague (Chapters 10, 11, 12, and 16). These numbers imply that we know how many prairie dogs existed 200 years ago, and how many remain today. In reality, however, accurate estimates of former and current numbers of prairie dogs are are elusive. Published in Conservation of the black-tailed prairie dog: saving North America's western grasslands, in 2006.

Welcome to the home of Encyclopedia of Hydrological Sciences online! Here you will find a wealth of information about this exciting and important publication, which first published in print in October 2005, and is now being updated online. Pressures are increasing on the availability and exploitation of fresh water resources due to population increase, pollution and degradation of resources, and variations in distribution as a result of regional and global change in the climate. A compilation of knowledge in this area, therefore, has become a prerequisite for education and training of research, as well as practising hydrologists. The Encyclopedia of Hydrological Sciences is the definitive research-level treatment...
Managers of public and private lands face a challenging dilemma. With finite and often limited resources, these individuals are being asked to manage for sustainability, but the definition of sustainability is typically user-defined, and ultimately vague. In cases where so-called objective approaches have been employed, the emphasis has been on ecological science that often ignores both the role and effects of humans in managed ecosystems (Liu 2001). These ecosystems are subjected to a high degree of environmental variability and anthropogenic disturbance; thus, assessing their condition must reflect their inherent complexity (Haskell et al. 1992). For example, in agricultural ecosystems, there has been a growing...
Mesas and buttes of the central Colorado Piedmont are composed of at least two distinct rock types, which differ in their cohesiveness and resistance to erosion. The lower parts of the exposed stratigraphic section are poorly cemented, Upper Cretaceous to Middle Eocene sandstones of the Dawson Formation. The caprocks are composed of one or more resistant formations of Late Eocene age: the Castle Rock Conglomerate, Wall Mountain Tuff, and the conglomerate of Larkspur Butte. These formations were originally deposited in topographic lows, but due to their resistance, they now cap prominent buttes and mesas of the Colorado Piedmont. Erosion of the caprock through progressive retreat of the butte scarp produces colluvium...
The Colorado River is the major surface water resource of the Southwest, and its upper basin has an area of approximately 102 ,000 square miles. The legal and institutional history of the Upper Colorado Basin is reviewed, as well as the hydrology, water use patterns, and the value of water in its subbasins. Water quality issues and the potential for intrastate and interstate water markets involving the Upper Basin are also discussed. It is a major contention of this study that the Upper Basin is not and will not be short of water if the five states of the basin use their supplies in an economically reasonable way. A set of basinwide policy recommendations includes the establishment of an interstate river basin commission....
Carbonate rocks (limestones and dolomites) constitute a major part of the geological column and contain not only 60% of the world's known hydrocarbons but also host extensive mineral deposits. This book represents the first major review of carbonate sedimentology since the mid 1970's. It is aimed at the advanced undergraduate - postgraduate level and will also be of major interest to geologists working in the oil industry. Carbonate Sedimentology is designed to take the reader from the basic aspects of limestone recognition and classification through to an appreciation of the most recent developments such as large scale facies modelling and isotope geochemistry. Novel aspects of the book include a detailed review...
"This title presents new research on the Mojave Desert and the contributors discuss the desert from several perspectives including regional threats such as expanding human populations, climate change, atmospheric nitrogen deposition and invasive plants, the impact of roads in a desert ecosystem, soils and plant communities, shrinking aquifers and the monitoring and sustainability of this fragile ecosystem." --NHBS Environment Bookstore. Published by University of Nevada Press, in 2009.
A comprehensive overview of interaction of the major hydrological and meteorological processes in mountain areas ie Cryosphere and Climatic Change, Snow Melt and Soil Water, Run-off and Floods, Water fluxes and Water Balance, Hydro-meteorological Coupling and Modelling. Each section will review recent research in the field and illustrate key interactions with case studies from mountainous regions in Europe, The Americas and Central Asia. Published by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd, in 2005.
This book gathers together noted scientists and historians to celebrate the varied and unique woodland region surrounding Mesa Verde National Park. One of the most widespread habitat types in the West, piñon-juniper woodlands have faced extensive eradication, grazing pressures, and the encroachment of human developments, and, consequently, only a few mature stands have reached their full growth potential. Mesa Verde Country, with its deep canyons and high ridgetops, is the magnificent home of many of these ancient stands. Impressively broad in scope, Floyd's volume thoroughly explores Mesa Verde Country's important and historic ecosystem. Covering such diverse topics as geologic evolution, natural history, human...
* First edition was very well received and sold over 1500 copies when the subject was relatively new. The field has now grown enormously and the second edition should do considerably better. * The new edition covers new developments in the field such as: Soils and Climate, stable isotope analysis of soils, soils and sequence stratigraphy. * This edition represents the only available overview of the subject at this level. In the western United States, over half of the water supply is derived from mountain snowmelt, with the snow acting as a natural reservoir, delaying runoff and providing runoff in the spring and summer when it is needed most. Interannual variability of both the magnitude and timing of spring runoff is tremendous, and western states have developed extensive reservoir systems to store water from wet years in order to weather droughts. However, important changes in snowpacks and runoff timing have been noted in recent decades. The fraction of annual streamflow that runs off during late spring and summer has declined by 10 to 25%. Warmer winters and springs have led to earlier snowmelt and a higher percentage of precipitation...
Rivers of North America is an important reference for scientists, ecologists, and students studying rivers and their ecosystems. It brings together information from several regional specialists on the major river basins of North America, presented in a large-format, full-color book. The introduction covers general aspects of geology, hydrology, ecology and human impacts on rivers. This is followed by 22 chapters on the major river basins. Each chapter begins with a full-page color photograph and includes several additional photographs within the text. These chapters feature three to five rivers of the basin/region, and cover several other rivers with one-page summaries. Rivers selected for coverage include the largest,...
