Hydrothermally altered rocks, particularly if water saturated, can weaken stratovolcanoes, thereby increasing the potential for catastrophic sector collapses that can lead to far-traveled, destructive debris flows, which are the largest volcanic hazards for Mount Adams and Mount Baker. Evaluating the hazards associated with such alteration is difficult because much of the alteration is obscured by ice and its depth extent is unknown. Intense hydrothermal alteration significantly reduces the resistivity and magnetization of volcanic rock and therefore hydrothermally altered rocks are identified with helicopter electromagnetic and magnetic measurements at Mount Baker and Mount Adams. High resolution magnetic and electromagnetic...

This dataset contains reflectance and transmission spectra of unexpanded and expanded vermiculite ore, and handpicked flakes of phlogopite, hydrobiotite, and vermiculite. These samples were collected from mines near Enoree, South Carolina; Libby, Montana; Louisa, Virginia; Palabora, Llano, Texas; and South Africa. Spectra are identified as either reflectance or transmission in the alphanumeric file names and correlate to specpr record numbers designated in the manuscript figures in which they are shown. These transmission spectra were converted to absorbance in many of the figures. Spectra of talc, fibrous richterite amphibole, and serpentine are from well characterized samples from Feiser Mine, Ruby Mountains,...
Subduction zones are home to the most seismically active faults on the planet. The shallow megathrust interface of subduction zones host our largest earthquakes, and are the only faults capable of M9+ ruptures. Despite these facts, our knowledge of subduction zone geometry - which likely plays a key role in determining the spatial extent and ultimately the size of subduction zone earthquakes - is incomplete. Here we calculate the three- dimensional geometries of all active global subduction zones. The resulting model - Slab2 - provides for the first time a comprehensive geometrical analysis of all known slabs in unprecedented detail.

From 2013 to 2015, bathymetric surveys of New York City’s six West of Hudson reservoirs (Ashokan, Cannonsville, Neversink, Pepacton, Rondout, and Schoharie) were performed to provide updated capacity tables and bathymetric maps. Depths were surveyed with a single-beam echo sounder and real-time kinematic global positioning system (RTK-GPS) along planned transects at predetermined intervals for each reservoir. A separate set of echo sounder data was collected along transects at oblique angles to the main transects for accuracy assessment. Field survey data was combined with water-surface elevations in a geographic information system to create three-dimensional surfaces representing reservoir-bed elevations in the...

The travel time map was generated using the Pedestrian Evacuation Analyst model from the USGS. The travel time analysis uses ESRI's Path Distance tool to find the shortest distance across a cost surface from any point in the hazard zone to a safe zone. This cost analysis considers the direction of movement and assigns a higher cost to steeper slopes, based on a table contained within the model. The analysis also adds in the energy costs of crossing different types of land cover, assuming that less energy is expended walking along a road than walking across a sandy beach. To produce the time map, the evacuation surface output from the model is grouped into 1-minute increments for easier visualization. The times in...

New active-source shallow seismic (shear-wave and acoustic-wave) measurements were obtained at 18 prioritized seismic monitoring station locations in the north San Francisco Bay area to measure site-specific ground motion amplification effects, soil depth, depth to bedrock (Z1.0 Vs=1 km/s), calculate site specific velocity-depth profiles and Vs30, and develop NEHRP site classifications for each location. This study was led by Principal Investigators Jamey Turner, Cooper Brossy, and Daniel O’Connell and field data were acquired by Glendon Adams and Lincoln Steele. Seismic monitoring sites that recorded high PGA values during the M6.0 Napa earthquake, proximal to higher population densities, and sites recommended...

This data release includes 2016-2019 soil moisture timeseries for two drainage basins (“Arroyo Seco” and “Dunsmore Canyon”) that burned during the 2009 Station Fire in Los Angeles County, California, USA. The Arroyo Seco (0.01 km2) and Dunsmore Canyon (0.5 km2) drainages include two soil pits, one located near the drainage divide and another near the basin outlet. Following the naming convention established by Smith et al. (2019), we refer to the soil pits near the Arroyo Seco drainage divide and basin outlet as “AS1” and “AS3,” respectively. Similarly, we refer to the soil pits near the Dunsmore Canyon drainage divide and basin outlet as “DC1” and “DC3,” respectively. The coordinates of AS1 and AS3 are, respectively,...

This data release contains field data for two P-wave seismic reflection profiles acquired across the Warm Springs Valley fault zone, part of the Northern Walker Lane, NV. The dataset consists of high-resolution seismic reflection field records in .segy format, shot coordinates in .csv format, and observers’ logs in .pdf format. The high-resolution seismic profiles are approximately 4 km long. The northern profile (Warm Springs Line 1) is oblique to a prominent fault bounded ridge. The southern profile (Warm Springs Line 2) crosses the northern end of Warm Springs Valley and is nearly co-located with COCORP profile NV-08. To obtain the seismic profiles, we used a 230 kg accelerated weight drop source and a nominal...

This data release includes new major and trace element geochemical data acquired by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) for igneous rocks in the Cripple Creek district in Colorado. Cripple Creek is among the largest epithermal districts in the world, with more than 800 metric tons (t) Au (>26.4 Moz). The ores are associated spatially, temporally, and genetically with ~34 to 28 Ma alkaline igneous rocks that were emplaced into an 18 km2- diatreme complex and surrounding Proterozoic rocks (Kelley and others, 2020). Igneous rocks associated with Cripple Creek are part of a regionally extensive episode of Oligocene alkaline magmatism that extended southward along the axis of the Rio Grande rift through New Mexico and...

Ar/Ar data are reported from minerals and rocks that were collected as part of a mineral resource investigation of the Tonopah, Divide, and Goldfield districts in Nevada. Data are reported from 92 samples and associated standards from eight separate neutron irradiations in the Denver USGS TRIGA reactor, including separated mineral grains and whole rocks. Data were collected by infrared laser heating of irradiated samples, either incremental heating or fusion, and analysis by multi-collector mass spectrometry. The reported data have been corrected for blanks, radioactive decay, and interfering nucleogenic reactions associated with sample irradiation.
