Text reads: "TRAGEDY A memorial plaque has been placed on the large dolomite boulder above and behind this sign in remembrance of the 28 men, women and children who lost their lives in the Madison River Earthquake of August 17, 1959... Album caption: Aug. 17 earthquake shook down the earthfill on the downstream side of Hebgen Dam in southwestern Montana several feet, exposing concrete core wall (right). Crack in earth at left is not significant. Spillway under concrete slab (center) was damaged, as was core wall. Earthfill on downstream side has been repaired since this picture was taken. (Montana Power Company Photo). 11-7-59.
