What are current conditions for important park natural resources? What are the critical data and knowledge gaps? What are some of the factors that are influencing park resource conditions? Natural Resource Condition Assessments (NRCAs) evaluate and report on the above for a subset of important natural resources in national park units (hereafter, parks). Focal study resources and indicators are selected on a park-by-park basis, guided by use of structured resource assessment and reporting frameworks. Considerations include park resource setting and enabling legislation (what are this park's most important natural resources?) and presently available data and expertise (what can be evaluated at this time?). In addition...
This map service was created to assemble oil and gas well information for a comprehensive inventory of energy data pertinent to the Wyoming Landscape Conservation Initiative decision-making process. These data are available as online resources for scientists, resource managers engaged in the Initiative, and other researchers. The GIS data and map documents created for this study are available for interactive analysis and/or download at the Energy Geoscience Center website.
This map service was created to assemble oil and gas well information, reflecting current conditions from 2002-2008, for a comprehensive inventory of energy data pertinent to the Wyoming Landscape Conservation Initiative decision-making process. These data are available as online resources for scientists, resource managers engaged in the Initiative, and other researchers. The GIS data and map documents created for this study are available for interactive analysis and/or download at the Energy Geoscience Center website: http://energy.usgs.gov/RegionalStudies/SouthwesternWyomingHomepage.aspx

NPScape is a landscape dynamics monitoring project that provides landscape-level data, tools, and evaluations for natural resource management, planning, and interpretation. The target audience for NPScape spans the range from GIS specialists who will benefit from the geospatial products, to ecologists and natural resource specialists who will be interested in the landscape metrics presented in a local and regional context, to park superintendents and other land managers who can incorporate the maps and graphics into reports or briefings.
A combination of citizen science inventories and expert assessments will be used to collect critical baseline information on known spring and seep resources using the Spring Ecosystem Inventory and Assessment Protocols and adapting them as needed for the unique arid Sky Island ecosystems. The assessment will collect information on channel morphology, riparian and wetland vegetation, water quality, aquatic macroinvertebrates, and wildlife. This information will be combined with historic data from cooperating agencies (Pima County, Santa Cruz County, USFS, NPA, USGS, USFWS, BLM, and AGFD) in a regional, on-line database to provide a landscape level context for managing resources, which was previously unavailable due...

From USFWS service description: "This data service identifies, in general, the areas where final critical habitat exist for species that are endangered or threatened. Special protections and/or restrictions are possible in areas where federal funding, permits, licenses, authorizations or actions occur or are required. Critical habitat are areas considered essential for the conservation of a listed species. These areas provide notice to the public and land managers the importance of these areas to the conservation of the species." The data can be downloaded in a shapefile, viewed on the Fish and Wildlife Service's map viewer, or accessed through a web service. It's also possible to view the data through the ScienceBase...
A point layer of sites known to be useful analogs for planetary science, such as impact craters, dunes, volcanoes, and other processes observed on bodies across the solar system.

Over 4,400 large scale commercial solar facilities are in operation in the United States as of December, 2021, representing over 60 gigawatts of electric power capacity; of these, over 3,900 are ground-mounted with capacities of 1MW or more, specified as large scale solar photovoltaic (LSPV) facilities. LSPV ground-mounted installations continue to grow, with over 400 projects coming online in 2021 alone. Currently, a comprehensive, publicly available georectified data describing the locations and spatial footprints of these facilities does not exist. Analysts from the US Geological Survey and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory collaborated to develop and release the United States Large Scale Solar Photovoltaic...

Springs within the US portion of the Desert LCC Boundary. This is a compilation of publicly available springs distribution data in Desert LCC. Data were imported from the NHD database, the Arizona State Land Office, the Arizona Department of Water Resources, and other publicly available resources. Additional data were contributed by Springs Stewardship Institute, Grand Canyon Wildlands Council, and the Sky Island Alliance.

The National Land Cover Database (NLCD) serves as the definitive Landsat-based, 30-meter resolution, land cover database for the Nation. NLCD provides spatial reference and descriptive data for characteristics of the land surface such as thematic class (for example, urban, agriculture, and forest), percent impervious surface, and percent tree canopy cover. NLCD supports a wide variety of Federal, State, local, and nongovernmental applications that seek to assess ecosystem status and health, understand the spatial patterns of biodiversity, predict effects of climate change, and develop land management policy. NLCD products are created by the Multi-Resolution Land Characteristics (MRLC) Consortium, a partnership of...

Detailed and accurate land cover and land cover change information is needed for South America because the continent is in constant flux, experiencing some of the highest rates of land cover change and forest loss in the world. The land cover data available for the entire continent are too coarse (250 m to 1 km) for resource managers, government and non-government organizations, and Earth scientists to develop conservation strategies, formulate resource management options, and monitor land cover dynamics. We used Landsat 30 m satellite data of 2010 and prepared the land cover database of South America using state-of-the-science remote sensing techniques. We produced regionally consistent and locally relevant land...

The Protected Areas Database of the United States (PAD-US) is a GIS database hosted by the USGS Gap Analysis Program (GAP) that illustrates and describes public land ownership, management and conservation lands nationally, including voluntarily provided privately protected areas. Version 1.2 of this data set was released by GAP in April, 2011 and can be downloaded from the USGS PAD-US web site (data available in geodatabase and shape file formats). The web site includes an online map viewer for the data as well as information on PAD-US standards, core attribute schema and a summary of commonly requested statistics. GAP compiled the Protected Areas Database of the United States (PAD-US) version 1.1 with significant...

NPS is transforming the way park resource information is managed and delivered to parks, partners, and the public. IRMA (Integrated Resource Management Applications) is the name given to the project that has guided this transformation, and to the web portal that is its end result. View or download the IRMA project brief (.pdf). IRMA is a portfolio of tools and applications, and the beginnings of a "one-stop" for data and information on park-related resources. From IRMA you can search for, view, and download documents, reports, publications, data sets, and park species lists. You can get information on park visitor numbers, park projects, and apply for a park research permit. Park staff can navigate to certain internal...

Global circulation models (GCM) of future climates predict extreme change for the Southwestern United States (Solomon and others, 2007; Diffenbaugh and others, 2008). Temperatures are projected to increase 3.5–4°C within the next 60–90 years while precipitation is projected to decline by 5–20 percent (Seager and others, 2007). The coalescing effect of these changes in temperature and precipitation in this already arid region will profoundly affect the distributions and viability of plant and animal populations. Region-wide ecosystem processes and system dynamics will be especially sensitive to relatively small shifts in climate in the arid and semi-arid environments (Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, 2005). Managers...
