The U.S. Geological Survey's Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center (UMESC) has created high-resolution land cover/use data sets for the Upper Mississippi River System (UMRS). Aerial images of Pools 1-13 Upper Mississippi River System and Pools, Alton-Marseilles, Illinois River were collected in color infrared (CIR) in August of 2010 at 8”/pixel and 16”/pixel respectively using a mapping-grade Applanix DSS 439 digital aerial camera. In August 2011, CIR aerial images of Pools 14-Open River South, Upper Mississippi River and Pools Dresden-Lockport, Illinois River were collected at 16”/pixel with the same camera. Aerial imagery for the Upper Mississippi River System (UMRS) Navigational Pool 5 drawdown follow-up was collected in true color (TC) in August of 2015 at 6”/pixel using a mapping-grade Applanix DSS 439 digital aerial camera. All TC aerial images were orthorectified, mosaicked, and compressed into a JPEG2000-format image. The TC aerial images were interpreted and automated using a genus-level 150-class Long Term Resource Monitoring (LTRM) vegetation classification. The 2015 vegetation database was prepared by or under the supervision of competent and trained professional staff using documented standard operated procedures.

The U.S. Geological Survey obtained measurements of channel geometry, flow velocity, and river discharge from five rivers in Alaska September 18–20, 2016, to support research on remote sensing of river discharge. The streamflow data were acquired from the Knik, Matanuska, Chena, and Salcha Rivers and Montana Creek using TeleDyne RD Instruments Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs), including the RioPro, StreamPro, and RiverRay models. SPMDs passively accumulate organic compounds from the aquatic enviroment, and are then analyzed for various organic compounds. The polygon (vector) shapefile represents Public Land Survey System (PLSS) sections, or 1-square mile areas of land, with information about Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land and mineral use authorizations for mining claims. For each section, the number of claims (by type) was determined and a density (by claim type) was calculated. The land areas specified by BLM authorizations vary in size and orientation, and may cross PLSS section boundaries. This data set was created to facilitate the BLM Greater Sage-Grouse Land Use Planning Strategy in the Utah Sub-Region. This data was developed and addressed, and used during preparation of an environmental impact statement to consider amendments to 14 BLM land use plans throughout the State of Utah, as well as 6 Forest Service land use plans. This planning process was initiated through issuance of a Notice of Intent published on December 6, 2011. This layer represents the number of Tier 1 fish species known to occur in each HUC10 watershed in the state, according to data available in CPW’s fish database as of December 2014. There are 25 fish species on the Tier 1 SGCN list; a maximum of eight different species occur in the same watershed. This map is an indicator of species richness only; it does not consider relative habitat quality, or population metrics such as density or abundance, across watersheds.

The Conservation Opportunity Areas (COAs) for Tennessee capture populations of GCN species and high quality habitats, and as appropriate, define the geographically relevant framework for achieving conservation outcomes. The COAs currently designed for Tennessee are large geographies, with the expectation that further prioritization and goal setting for specific habitat outcomes can be achieved within them through collaborations with partners on shared objectives. While designing the COAs for Tennessee, the planning team considered three major attributes: GCN habitat priority, the problems affecting the habitats, and the on-the-ground opportunities to implement conservation actions.

Ecological Focus Areas (EFA), geographically explicit areas in which to address conservation issues, represent landscapes where conservation actions can be applied for maximum benefit to all Kansas wildlife. Each EFA includes a suite of SGCN and priority habitats and a unique set of conservation actions designed to address the specific resource concerns facing these species and habitats. Each EFA also includes one or more protected areas that can serve as demonstration sites for conservation actions.
