This data release contains phytoplankton data and vertical profile measurements of water quality and light in oligotrophic (low nutrient) lakes within the Adirondack Park, New York State. Data were collected between June and October 2021 at five lakes. Four lake locations (Nearshore, Open Water, Layer, Bloom) were sampled representing one of four sample types (Bottom Sediment, Surface Water, Bloom Material, Layer). Water-quality field parameters (water temperature, dissolved-oxygen concentration and percent saturation, pH, specific conductance, turbidity, chlorophyll fluorescence, phycocyanin fluorescence, and fluorescent dissolved organic material) were measured at each sampling location from the surface to the...

The data set includes the daily streamflow predictions from (Long Short-Term Memory) LSTM models for 45 basins (27 basins in New England region and 18 basins in Great Basin region) in contrasting hydroclimate regions (water-limited Great Basin region and energy-limited New England region) in the United States. Also, the shapefiles of study basins and hydroclimate regions, and data to support the statistical results, figures, and tables are included.
The Landsat-based Irrigation Dataset (LANID) uses a random-forest machine-learning model with greenness and vegetative indices, climate data, and crop masks to identify irrigated crops (Xie and others, 2021, Xie and Lark, 2021). Separate western US and eastern US methods are used to train and validate the model. Annual LANID maps for 2018-20 were created using the same techniques in Xie and others, 2021, and Xie and Lark, 2021.

Data includes fish abundance and habitat data collected at ten sites in the Sandusky River, OH. Fish were collected using two 3.67 m long hoop nets with an initial hoop diameter of 0.91 m. Nets were set perpendicular to the current, opening toward the shoreline. Nets were set for approximately 24 hours and catch rates for each set were defined as the number of fish caught in the two hoop nets per 24-hour sampling period. Fish were identified to species, measured for total length (mm), and released. Water quality was taken daily at each site at approximately the same time of day with a YSI Exo2 multiparameter sonde. Physical habitat data was recorded at the start of each trial. Vegetation coverage was characterized...

This multi-layer GeoPackage contains the YKD Coastal Zone Survey design transects from 1985 to present. The original transects were imported to this SQLite database structure and saved as individual polylines named according to the year they were created (e.g., “main.YK_1985_Trans,” “main.YK_1986_Trans,” “main.YK_1987_Trans,” etc.). The aerial transects were developed systematically from randomly-selected start points and created along constant lines of latitude. The inter-transect spacing in the low, medium, high, and very-high density strata varies so that areas with higher waterfowl density are surveyed more intensively. Though the overall study area never changed, the YKD Survey design was modified several times,...

In 2019 a pilot study was conducted to determine the feasibility of using distance sampling to estimate density and population size of goose and eider nests on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta (YKD). Distance sampling (Buckland et al. 2001) is a common and well-understood method to estimate wildlife population size or density, especially for sparse and hard-to-detect populations. A main advantage of distance sampling is that it accounts for imperfect detection and gives precise estimates for a given level of effort relative to other methods. The objectives for the pilot project in 2019 was to (1) determine if distance sampling is feasible on the YKD, (2) determine what aspects of the field protocol need to be changed or...

A three-dimensional groundwater flow model of the Central Valley in California was developed to aid water managers in understanding how water moves through the aquifer system, to predict water-supply scenarios, and to address issues related to subsidence. The USGS California Water Science Center made a detailed assessment of groundwater availability of the Central Valley aquifer system, which includes: (1) the status of groundwater resources; (2) how these resources have changed over time, particularly related to subsidence; and (3) tools to assess system responses to stresses from future human uses and climate variability and change. This effort builds on previous investigations, such as the USGS Central Valley...

The timing of biological events in plants and animals, such as migration and reproduction, is shifting due to climate change. Anadromous fishes are particularly susceptible to these shifts, as they are subject to strong seasonal cycles when transitioning between marine and freshwater habitats to spawn. We used linear models to determine the extent of phenological shifts in adult alewife (Alosa pseudoharengus) as they migrated from ocean to freshwater environments during spring to spawn at 12 sites along the northeast U.S. We also evaluated broad-scale oceanic and atmospheric drivers that trigger their movements from offshore to inland habitats including sea surface temperature (SST), North Atlantic Oscillation index,...

The area surrounding La Conchita, California (CA), USA experienced significant landslides and debris flows following a storm on January 10th, 2005, including a deadly deep-seated landslide that destroyed 13 houses and caused 10 fatalities (Jibson, 2006). This data release documents the locations of shallow landslide source locations in the vicinity of the deadly 2005 La Conchita landslide. Landslide locations were mapped as points using post-event imagery available in Google Earth. The data release includes: 1) .csv file containing the point locations of shallow hillslope landslides, 2) .zip file containing shapefile (.shp) of the mapped study area. References: Jibson, R. W. (2006). The 2005 La Conchita, California,...

This is an SQLite GeoPackage simple feature vector database of spectacled eider relative densities predicted from a generalized additive model across the Arctic Coastal Plain. These density are “relative” because year- or observer-specific detection is not incorporated. However, the estimation model include observer as a random effect and predictions are made after removing the effect of observer (i.e., at the average observer). Each year is a separate layer named by year. Predictions are gridded into cells 750m per side but are trimmed to the ACP survey area, so some cells are smaller. For each year, the variable ‘fit’ gives the expected density, ‘se.fit’ gives the standard error of the fit, ‘Sample.Label’ is an...

Nature’s Network Conservation Design depicts an interconnected network of lands and waters that, if protected, will support a diversity of fish, wildlife, and natural resources that the people of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic region depend upon. This map serves as the “cover page” for the Nature’s Network (naturesnetwork.org) suite of products: it outlines some of the most important natural areas in the region and provides an entry point to learn more about the information used to identify them. The Conservation Design represents a combination of three Nature’s Network products: 1) the terrestrial core-connector network, 2) aquatic core areas, and 3) core habitat for imperiled species. The Terrestrial Core-connector...

This data release contains observation data, design transects, design strata, analysis estimates output, and associated metadata from the Alaska Arctic Coastal Plain Aerial Breeding Pair Survey. The Alaska Arctic Coastal Plain Aerial Breeding Pair Survey provides data on distribution, abundance, and trend of 33 bird species that nest in northern Alaska. The survey has been conducted in its current form annually since 2007 with the exception of years 2020 and 2021. Methods generally follow the standard operating procedures for the Waterfowl Breeding Population and Habitat Survey. Primary uses of the survey data are to evaluate recovery status of Spectacled Eider (Somateria fischeri) and Steller’s Eider (Polysticta...

In 2016, for the first time, an abundance of age-0 silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) were captured at several sites upstream of Lock and Dam 19 on the Upper Mississippi River near Keokuk, Iowa. These data were collected in an attempt to determine the early life environments and frequency and timing of the reproductive events that led to a large year class of age-0 silver carp. This information is important for informing decisions about control measures. We sampled these fish to determine age (days) and early life environments using their otoliths. Sampled age-0 silver carp were collected from navigation Pools 18 and 19 from July–October 2016 using a variety of sampling gears. We aged these fish by counting...

This geopackage contains the density strata that were used to create the YKD Coastal Zone Survey’s current four-year rotating panel design. This file was derived from a mid-1980’s ArcInfo coverage, ‘Sampling Intensity’ (“SI arc”) that was produced through the visual interpretation of 1:250,000-scale LANDSAT imagery and the nesting density of cackling Canada geese.
This file crosswalks each species in the raw transcribed data to a common name, scientific name, four-letter American Ornithological Union (AOU) species code, and provides species-specific decision logic for the analysis of Arctic Coastal Plain, Black Scoter, Copper River, and Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta aerial survey data.
