The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) installed acoustic bedload monitoring systems at four sites along the Trinity River below Lewiston Dam to record the noise generated by mobilized bed material, known as sediment generated noise (SGN) (Geay and others, 2017). The four sites are: Trinity River at Lewiston (TRAL, 11525500), Trinity River above Grass Valley Creek (TRGVC, 11525630), Trinity River at Limekiln Gulch (TRLG, 11525655) and Trinity River at Douglas City (TRDC, 11525854). These sites were selected because bedload measurements are frequently made at these locations during restoration flows as part of monitoring done by the Trinity River Restoration Program (TRRP). Monitoring took place in the spring of 2015,...

The Lower Mississippi-Gulf Water Science Center of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Tennessee Department of Transportation, computed at-site flood-frequency for 139 urban streamgages operated by the USGS in Tennessee and parts of Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Urban imperviousness in the basins, based on the 2011 National Land Cover Database, was at least 10 percent (Homer and others, 2015). Drainage areas of the streamgage basins ranged from 0.15 - 161 square miles. Annual peak-flow data from the 1947 - 2022 water years were used in the study (U.S. Geological Survey, 2024). Peak-flow records used were unaffected by regulation. Flood quantiles estimated...
The data include soil texture, soil-water, and estimated soil strength properties for soil map units and from geotechnical investigations of landslide areas affecting highways in the municipalities of Lares, Naranjito, and Utuado, Puerto Rico. The map units are derived from published soil mapping (https://websoilsurvey.sc.egov.usda.gov/app/) and have been grouped by municipality, Unified Soil Classification System symbol, and order-of-magnitude ranges of hydraulic conductivity to create generalized map units for assigning soil-water parameters and soil-strength parameters. Each group (generalized unit) includes one or more soil map units. The groups are numbered sequentially from one (1) for each municipality with...
These data were compiled as part of a long-term (1964 - 2022) water quality monitoring program at Lake Powell. Objectives of our study were to release a consistent record of long-term water quality data. The 58-year limnology dataset captures some water quality parameters (temperature, salinity, major ions, total suspended solids) from reservoir filling to present day. It also contains a 38-year record of secchi depth, and a ~30-year record of nutrients, phytoplankton, and zooplankton assemblages. The data were collected from various sites within the Lake Powell reservoir and the Glen Canyon dam. Regular monthly sampling occurred at three sites near the dam and reservoir-wide sampling was generally conducted quarterly,...
Note: This data release has been deprecated. An updated version is available at https://doi.org/10.5066/P9WX2RGU. Introduction Potential offsite impacts to public and ecosystem health from exposure to current-use pesticides and other organic contaminants are a growing concern in Hawaiʻi. In response to these concerns, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the State of Hawaiʻi Department of Agriculture (HDOA), initiated a comprehensive pesticide-monitoring program of surface water in Hawaiʻi in 2016. The State of Hawaiʻi Department of Health (HDOH) is collaborating by providing technical and scientific assistance. The objectives of the Hawaiʻi pesticide-monitoring program include (1) documenting...
After wildfires occurred in the western United States during 2020, in-stream water quality monitors and automatic samplers were deployed in four burned watersheds and one unburned watershed. In-stream water temperature, turbidity, and fluorescent dissolved organic matter (fDOM) were measured at high frequency, and the fDOM data were corrected for temperature and turbidity effects. Automatic samplers were triggered during storm events, which captured turbid conditions in the wildfire affected streams. Laboratory experiments with storm event samples informed site-specific turbidity correction coefficients for fDOM data. An iterative solver approach also was developed to verify turbidity correction coefficients. This...

Here we present a time series of San Francisco Bay bathymetric grids created from historical hydrographic surveys collected by the National Ocean Service (NOS) and its predecessor, the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey, from the 1850s to 1980s and one additional survey of south San Francisco Bay collected in 2005 by Sea Surveyor, Inc. Using surface modeling software, the soundings from each survey were supplemented with hand-drawn contours and shorelines obtained from topographic sheets to generate bathymetric DEMs at a horizontal resolution of 25 or 50 meters. The DEMs are divided into four subembayments: Central, South, San Pablo, and Suisun Bays and each subembayment was surveyed either five or six times...

Particulate samples were collected from a fish hatchery in Puyallup, Washington, September 18 – 20, 2023 during late summer, low-flow conditions in the intake creek. Settled solids were collected from a retention pond and from the incubation room trough. The trough solids likely had been deposited during storm events the previous winter. A third sample was collected in the incubation room, using a continuous flow centrifuge (Conn et al., 2016) to capture suspended particulate material from approximately 700 L of flow-through water over three days. Small particulates escaping the centrifuge were captured on 0.45-micron glass fiber filters. Samples were analyzed for: grain size distribution, percent total carbon and...
Model Archive Summary (MAS), "382829121351801_LIS_ExtendedMAS.docx", describing the development of a continuous, 15-minute suspended-sediment concentration (SSC) time series regression model for the site: Toe Drain Near Babel Slough Near Freeport, California (U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) site #382829121351801). The SSC time series is computed from instream turbidity data that is managed by the California Department of Water Resources (CDWR) using a YSI 6-series multi-parameter water quality sonde. Complete methods for turbidity data collection and model development are described in the attached methods document (MAS).
