The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Minnesota Department of Health, conducted a study to determine the occurrence of unregulated contaminants in source and finished drinking waters throughout Minnesota. Minnesota relies on both groundwater and surface water sources for drinking water, which may be vulnerable to influences such as wastewater discharge and/or agricultural activities. Thus, drinking water facilities apply some form of treatment to source waters prior to distribution. Although drinking water treatment is mostly focused on satisfying regulatory requirements, it may provide secondary benefits for removal of unregulated contaminants. In 2019, 2021, and 2022, paired source and finished drinking...

Viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus (VHSV) is an aquatic rhabdovirus causing severe disease in numerous freshwater and saltwater fish species. Initially the virus was been found to cause disease in European fish populations starting around 1938 and was first detected in North America in the late 1980s. Of the four VHSV genotypes (I, II, III, and IV), the North American subtype IVb isolates have a broad host range. To determine whether endangered pallid sturgeon Scaphirhynchus albus, are susceptible to VHSV-IVb infection, juvenile pallid sturgeon and two pallid sturgeon cell lines derived from skin and spleen tissue were tested. Detection of viable virus via a plaque assay and molecular detection of the virus results...

Treated effluent from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) contains contaminants not fully removed during the treatment process and that may pose environmental health risks when discharged to surface waters. This data release presents inputs for and results from a wastewater reuse model that used data compiled from several sources to calculate the following estimates for each non-tidal, non-coastline, initialized National Hydrography Dataset Version 2.1 (NHDPlus V2) stream segment in the Potomac River watershed: (1) accumulated wastewater as a percent of total streamflow (ACCWW%); and (2) predicted environmental concentrations (PECs, in micrograms per liter) of 69 municipal effluent-derived contaminants. ACCWW% values...

On 16 July 2021, measurements were made of the volcanic gases emitted from Iliamna Volcano, Mount Douglas, Mount Martin, and Mount Mageik (Alaska, USA) from aboard a fixed-wing aircraft. Two zenith-facing differential optical absorption spectrometers were used to measure incident scattered solar ultraviolet radiation while traversing beneath the gas plumes on multiple occasions. These data were used to derive volcanic SO2 column densities and emission rates. In addition to the remote sensing payload, two in situ instruments were used to make measurements of trace gas concentrations while on flight paths through the volcanic plumes: a USGS multi-GAS (multiple Gas Analyzer System; Werner et al., 2017) analyzer for...
Invasion of exotic annual grass (EAG), such as cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum), red brome (Bromus rubens), and medusahead (Taeniatherum caput-medusae), could have irreversible degradation impact to arid and semiarid rangeland ecosystems in the western United States. The distribution and abundance of these EAG species are highly influenced by weather variables such as temperature and precipitation. We set out to develop a machine learning modelling approach using a lightGBM algorithm to predict how changes in annual and immediate past precipitation regimes impact the abundance of EAG in the study area. The predictive model primarily utilized edaphic and weather variables and a seed source proxy from previous years to...

This data release and model archive provides all data, code, and modelling results used in Topp et al. (2023) to examine the influence of deep learning architecture on generalizability when predicting stream temperature in the Delaware River Basin (DRB). Briefly, we modeled stream temperature in the DRB using two spatially and temporally aware process guided deep learning models (a recurrent graph convolution network - RGCN, and a temporal convolution graph model - Graph WaveNet). The associated manuscript explores how the architectural differences between the two models influence how they learn spatial and temporal relationships, and how those learned relationships influence a model's ability to accurately predict...

The Hudson River, New York, was contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from two General Electric plants over a period of ~30 years and PCBs are still present in sediment and biota today. The river provides habitat for a variety of plants and animals, including native freshwater mussels. Although little is known about mussels in this river, managers were concerned that a 7-year remediation program to remove PCB-contaminated sediments could affect mussels. From 2013-2019, we conducted stratified (non-remediated, before remediation, after remediation) quantitative surveys across 17-pool-stratum combinations across nine pools. Sampling was done during August through October of each year. At each site, divers...

Bees were collected in 24 fields across eastern Iowa in summer 2019. This data collection was part of a pesticide study funded by the USGS Ecosystems Mission Area- Environmental Health Program. Bees were collected using the sweep net method and then were immediately placed on dry ice in the field. Bees were kept frozen to prevent degradation. In the lab, each wild bee was photographed from one or more angles using an AmScope microscope fitted with an MU1400 digital camera at 20x magnification. Bees were then morphologically identified based on the images. All images were checked for quality control before they were archived on this site. This data release includes 1) a text file with bee identifications and image...
This is the qPCR and loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) data in support of the article "Validation of a portable eDNA detection kit for invasive carps". There are four types of data contained in five files including: limit of detection analysis for each method (qPCR and LAMP), qPCR analysis and LAMP analysis of eDNA samples collected over time from ponds containing 3 or 33 Grass Carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) mixed with thousands of baitfish. The standards and controls data collected with the eDNA sample analysis are split into separate files for each method to simplify the statistical analysis of the eDNA sample data.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and related chemical and physical data are presented from shallow soil and groundwater at two sites in New Hampshire. The two sites, the former Brentwood Fire Training Area and White Farm, were selected because materials known to contain PFAS were used at each site. White Farm is an active farm where biosolids have been applied for several years. At the former Brentwood Fire Training Area, PFAS-containing aqueous film-forming foams were applied as part of regular fire training exercises. At each site, soil samples were collected in a gridded pattern over the site. Soil horizons within the sampling intervals were described using the National Soil Survey Center Natural Resources...
The Department of the Interior (DOI) Office of Wildland Fire and USGS created the The Wildfire Hazard and Risk Assessment Inventory to meet the Monitoring, Maintenance, and Treatment Plan requirements under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL). It provides an inventory of key national, regional, and state wildfire risk and fire hazard assessments useful for understanding different characterizations of fire risk. Some of the assessments may be useful for communicating contributions toward risk reduction of treatments funded by DOI, including investments under BIL. For each assessment, the inventory provides a description and information about the spatial extent, resolution, fire modeling approach, values considered...
Digitization of oil and gas well pad sites in the Piceance region of Western Colorado. Well pad sites were delineated using a modified version of the Rapid Land Cover Mapping protocol (Preston and Kim, 2016). The base imagery used to delineate boundaries is the 2015 National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) imagery. Well coordinate locations facilitating the targeting of well pad sites were downloaded from the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (COGCC) in February 2016. The Herring River in Wellfleet, MA is a tidally-restricted estuary system. Management options including potential restoration of unrestricted tidal flows require an understanding of pre-restoration sediment conditions. Altering future tidal flows may cause changes in net sediment flux and direction, which could affect marsh restoration and aquaculture in Wellfleet Harbor. This research aims to measure sediment fluxes seaward of the Herring River restriction and sediment concentrations landward of the restriction. These measurements will inform management efforts by estimating the sediment budget and sediment availability after possible removal of the tidal restriction.
